the most powerful 17" in your price range would be the dell 9400 (1705). you could also check out the hp dv9000t, but its gpu is not as powerful.

Re: Dell 1705 or Hp dv9000t
well as ejl said the 9400 is one of the most powerfu laptops in the given category and price range it has a good money to features ratio as it has a 7900gs graphic card andd also dual layer burner but one of its fall back points is the looks and the construction and also the customer support but that depends on ur luck theres nothing wrong in the construction but is a bit low compared to the dv9000t as in the dv9000 the qualty is superb so is the looks but the gpu is lacking in performance as it only sports a 7600 card and its also a bit better than dell in custoer support all the best choosin

The HP has a major advantage of having an integrated keypad. If that's something you might need, the HP deserves serious consideration.
Thing is, I hear FEAR likes a good GPU, and the Dell's is better. I never understood why they don't put a keypad on their 17 inch machine though...there's plenty of room....

Re: Dell 1705 or Hp dv9000t
I would recommend the HP dv9000t over the Dell here; you said you weren't much of a gamer, and it doesn't sound like you are going to be playing all that much. The Go7600 256MB in the HP is more than powerful enough to handle new games. Not as powerful as the Go7900GS mind you, but sacrificing all the extra features, better build quality, and so on that the HP has in order to get that top-end graphics card in the Dell isn't your best idea in my opinion.

Re: Dell 1705 or Hp dv9000t
Minimum 1 GB of ram, WSXGA+ screen. If you're not going to upgrade to at least the T5600 CPU then stick with the base T2250. If I were you, and I wanted the notebook to last 4 years, I'd max out the CPU option, in this case the T7200 (Too bad they don't have the 7400). Get the 120 GB hard drive (add another one later), and do NOT get the 512 MB GeForce Go 7600...256 is perfectly fine. The 512 is a gimmick...it really can't take advantage of it.
Other than that, pick which things you like better. High-capacity battery, Bluetooth, up to you.
