Re: Gaming but Portable
Probably the best portable gaming notebooks are:
For 14":
- Compal HGL30
- Asus A8Js
- Asus A8Jp (from Newegg.com)
All of these models have great mid-range videocards (nVidia 7600/7700 or ATI X1600/X1700), which should play the current and new games very well.
You can check these out at Powernotebooks.com and XoticPC.com

Re: Gaming but Portable
Second Gophn's recommendations....and I'd definitely stick with a 14 inch for portability reasons in your case.
The HGL30 will have an edge in battery life over the other two, because it usually comes with an extended battery. However, all 3 will get you through a movie in flight, if power is managed properly, and the Asus's video chips are slightly more powerful.

Re: Gaming but Portable
i am on my Fathers Dell inspiron 6400 that he got from work it has a 15.4 " glossy widescreen. the size and weight seem fine to me. is the one that i picked similar in size and weight?
Answer:
Re: Gaming but Portable
If usage on an airplane (unless you're flying first class, of course) is important to you, I'd steer clear of the 15.4" size. It just won't work in a coach seat, especially if the guy in front of you reclines.
I like the three 14.1" systems Gophn mentioned, and agree that the Compal will give you better battery life at the expense of a slighlty less powerful GPU compared to the two Asus models.
The Asus G1 is an excellent system and a great deal if you are looking at 15.4" systems as well.

Re: Gaming but Portable
well mostly it will be used around the house. so i can game and watch tv. multitask ftw. i would like to bring it to work which doesnt seem like much of an issue. i do go on flights but usually with my wife so i will have 2 seats to share the laptop since we will probably watch together. i would like a 14.1 system but i cant seem to find one that has the newest video card and things like bluetooth included and i would prefer to have 2gig of ram too. if you know where i can get this with a 14.1 system i would appreciate the heads up

Re: Gaming but Portable
The main issue with the 15.4" system is with the height of the screen when opened. You wouldn't be able to open it enough--and if the guy in front of you reclines, there's a chance his seatback could crush your LCD.
If you're limiting your options to the go 7700 or x1700, you will have very few options. Currently the Asus A8Js/A8Jp, G1, and V1J are the only systems with those GPUs. The go 7600 and x1600 systems are not weak, and may be worth considering as well.
EDIT: btotech.com does offer upgrades on the A8Js. There may be other resellers who do as well, so you may want to look into it.

The 7700 and 7600 chips are very recent, but if by "new" you mean DirectX10, they're just barely coming out for desktops, so it'll be a while before mobile versions show up.
Incidentally, even if you have 2 tray tables I'd stick with the 14 inch machines. It's nothing to do with width; it's the height of the screen that is the important factor on an airplane tray.
EDIT: Chris, you apparently type faster than I do :D
