Help me getting an Asus A8JS or an alternative
Hi there,
I am planning to get a portable gaming notebook (meaning no 17"). The best one i found until now is A8JS. But I have some concerns. It has a resolution of 1440x900 which is a little bit high to play the games. I want to play the games in the native resolution cause otherwise they look so crappy. The gfx card seems pretty good.
My questions:
1 - Is there an alternative to this laptop?
2 - Is ATI x1600 256mb performance close to 7700 512mb?
3 - Where can I find a good deal for A8JS. Under or equal to $1500?

You want to look towards the Compal HEL80, Compal HGL80 (14") or the Asus 96J for your budget and needs. They are pretty bang for the buck for a good CPU and mid-range gaming videocard (that can play the current games fine with good settings).

1. check out the compal hgl30
2. pretty close....i don't think you will find much difference in game performance
3. best bet would be ewiz or btotech...they usually have the best deals, though i don't think either have it at $1500 or under. if you had gotten in on the pre-order, you would have gotten it for that price.

If you feel 1440x900 is too high, try looking at some of the 15'4 inch notebooks, mainly the Asus S96j/Z96j or the HP nc8430. The Acer Aspire 5112 is also a good choice.
All of these have the Radeon X1600 which is the same as the nvidia 7600/7700. The 7700 and the X1700 are just 80nm versions of the 7600 and the X1600. The performance difference between them is negligible.
There are quite a few resellers in the USA for Asus. Gentech PC is one of them, MilestonePC is another. I think one other one is btotech.

First of all thanks to everyone who replied. I really liked the features of compal hel80, however asus gives out free Windows Vista upgrades. I checked the HP ncs8430 too but it's way over 1500. Also in almost every retailer a8js is sold out. I will continue searching.

I also added nc8430 to the list. How does it compare to AJ8S? The pricing on HP website is very weird. When I try to configure it I see ridiculous prices. Am I doing something wrong?

Customizing the nc8430 will be much more expensive compared to buying a preconfigured one. You can get a preconfigured one for much cheaper and then buy extra RAM/hard drive and swap it out yourself for a much lessser cost.

The problem is the cpu. I want at least core duo 2 2ghz. The C2D 2GHZ version comes with a 1680x1050 screen. Maybe I should go with the C2D 1.86 version.
