Question:
Detailed description of what I need-plz give input
Hey everyone, Happy Holidays!
I currently own a Dell Dimension 8250 Desktop with 2.4GHz P-4, 512MB RDRAM (how does this compare to the DDR SDRAM in most of today's laptops), 60GB HD (don't know speed), 64MB GeForce Graphics Card. I've really enjoyed this computer and I find it more than enough power for all my computing needs. I'm giving this to my parents and will be purchasing a notebook within the next month or two. Here is what I need out of it and what I would like:
I will use the computer primarily for the Internet (while simultaneously on AIM and playing WinAmp), Microsoft Office applications, storing digital camera photos (very little editing), and MAYBE watch a DVD if I'm on trips (but my TV is the source for TV/DVD watching).
I don't travel a whole lot, I'm a student, but I definitely would not go over 6.5-7 lbs. Ideally, I would like it around 5-6 lbs and reasonably thin.
Screen size needs to be at least 14", but no bigger than 15.4", with a widescreen preferred. I would also like a normal-sized keyboard. Because I'm looking for a lighter and smaller screened notebook, I'd be expecting 3+ hours of real-life battery time.
I'd also like it to be reasonably stylish.
I have a maximum of around $1500, lower would be ideal.
I would like to find a notebook with an AMD Athlon 3000+ (or faster)or P-M 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM, CD-RW, and a 72K HD (or 54K if 72 isn't an option).
I have found something very similar at www.ibuypower.com but I have not heard good reviews about them. Since I hardly ever play intensive games, I felt an integrated graphics card is sufficient. However, does this slow down the computer over having a better (64 or 128MB graphics card)?
So far, my interests are in the Gateway M320, Fujitsu LifeBook S6231, Acer Travelmate 4504, HP DV1000 and Dell 600M. Although they do not fit the exact requirements I listed above, they come pretty close. They are stylish, reasonably priced, and seem well equipped.
Any help you can give with this decision would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Answer: I'd say that it is always better to go with dedicated graphics, but maybe people have different opinions. Also, could you post specs of those laptops so we can compare?
zv5000z AMD 64 3000+ 1.8 Ghz 768 DDR SDRAM 15.4" WXGA (1280x800) 30 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive 64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go
Answer: If you say your current computer has more then enough power for all your computing needs and you don't plan to travel why would you want a new computer? If your current model works well maybe if anything you should consider small upgrades unless you have money to burn then I'm sure we can all help you with that.

Answer: The reason I am getting rid of my desktop is that my parents are getting a new computer and they said they'd be willing to get me a new one if they take my current one. I always like new toys.

Answer: anyone else?
As a side note, I do not know if I will be able to see the Dell 600M or the Fujitsu Lifebook since I don't have any retailers locally that carry them nor do I have any friends with them. If I bought one of these, it would have to be on what I've read of everyone else.
Answer: dont get the dell 600m
i think the build quality is horrible and the screen looks awful..
the fujitsu is cheaper on newegg, i cant comment on the screen of that tho.
i wanna see the gateway in person, the specs and price look great, but if the screen is no good then to me its all down the tube.
you can get a dv1000 at HPshopping with very good specs and get a student deiscount for a good price. the only thing that stopped me was the screen. to me it is horrible
good luck

Answer: The Fujitsu is a great machine, as you'll consistantly throughout these forums. It's not widescreen though and doesn't meet your minimum size requirement. The Acer TravelMate 4500 is also a nice machine given its price and specs. I think you need to make a decision on the type of notebook you want first, you still are looking across classes.
