Alienware m5750 or HP dv9000t? I really need some help...

Question:
Alienware m5750 or HP dv9000t? I really need some help...
Hi! I’m about to enter college, and through the years I’ve managed to collect around $1700 for a laptop. After a thorough search, I have decided that I’ll either go for the Alienware m5750 or the HP dv9000t. In addition to working on my notebook for research and word processing, I also want to game occasionally. These are my specs:
Alienware m5750:
Core 2 Duo T7200
1GB DDR-667
80GB SATA
256MB X1800
Windows XP Pro
HP dv9000t:
Core 2 Duo T7200
1GB DDR-667
80GB SATA
512MB GO 7600
Windows XP Pro
I am new to the world of notebooks; so I need to ask a few questions to get some additional insight before I go and buy either of these pc’s. If any of u guys have information on the following, I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
1. Is the heat in the Alienware m5750 notebook a serious issue? If so, is it uncomfortable for typing and other ‘normal’ day to day computer usages (such as IM, browsing the web, checking e-mail, etc.)? Would it require a cooler?
2. How’s the heat dissipation in the HP dv9000t notebook? (vs. the Alienware m5750?)
2. What’s more suited for a university student? The Alienware dv9000t or the HP m5750? (The weight is not a problem for me.)
3. What’s more durable out of the two?
4. What’s more likelier to cause an early onset of problems (hardware/software)?
Thanks again!

Another vote for the HP DV9000T given alienware's slide in service, support and quality.

with a budget of 1700 id get an asus a8js
I would only get the hp if it was spending 1100 or less, a very basic model.
I might get the alienware upgrading nothing but dvd for like 1400 because the x1800 is a powerful card its like a 7800 gtx.
The thing that scares me off for you is battery life and heat. I dont think you will get much mobile use out of it in school, it needs a ac plug and a desk.
Its mostly a desktop pc.
I think what you really want though is the dell e1705
it has the gpu around the alienware, is cheaper and more practical.

Here's a tip - don't pay the extra $125 for the 512MB Go7600 in the dv9000t. It makes no difference; the 256MB version has the same performance.
I know you said you do not mind the weight, but I can't find myself recommending either laptop for a university student. A 17" laptop's problem lies not with the weight, but with the bulk. I would go no larger than 15.4". Take a look at the Asus A8JP from www.Newegg.com, it is about $1,300 with a very powerful configuration. If you have a bit more money to spend, then the A8Js is even more powerful.
I'll be moving this thread to the What Should I Buy forum; perhaps you could complete the FAQ and make our job of recommending notebooks a bit easier. ;)

I have pretty much the same notebook as the Alienware. They are built by Uniwill and are simly rebranded by Alienware and Fujitsu Siemens. To answer some of your questions, the notebook doesn't quite get as hot as you would think. It gets a little warm around the right palm, because that is where the Mobility X1800 is located. Other than that, it remains quite cool, and I don't use a notebook cooler with it.
However, I must agree with other members. Neithe rof thr two notebooks are for students. They won't get massive amounts of battery life, and both are quite large. I don't have to use my notebook out of my home, so I made the choice of purchasing a 17" one.
I would conside some of the other notebooks that have been mentioned by Chaz and Stamar. Namely the A8JS, which is powerful, built very well, and is a good size for a student.

Thanks all you guys for the info.. yeah I initially thought that a 17-inch would be too big for college.... and thanks for the alternatives that you had mentioned... i will 're-evaluate' my position lol
But all in all, right now is probably the worst time to buy a notebook, with Vista and Santa-rosa and some new graphics chips coming out.... (sigh) well, thank u all for ur help.. it's much appreciated..

(sigh) well, thank u all for ur help.. it's much appreciated.. I'd agree with you there. Now, if you need a notebook, then you won't be disappointed with the current selection, and you're going to get a very fast machine. However, with Vista and the Santa Rosa Centrino Pro platform right around the corner, you might as well wait and get that. Centrino Pro is going to bring along a lot of cool stuff, along with Vista. You'll probably be waiting until the middle of Spring to get one of them though. I'm not expecting all manufacturers to immediately come out with Centrino Pro-based laptops, adoption takes time, especially for third-party resellers.
