I like the percieved premium brand of sony vaio

4 or so hours but i am flexible

yes I want something that is well designed, something that looks elegant

I want it to last a few years 4 if possible thats why I am willing to pay extra to get hardware that will deal with future needs

I want something that I can use for a period of time, that I can replace my tv and dvd recorder that will plug and play with my lcd for watching tv, something I can take about with me on the odd occasion and I can work on a summer day outside via wireless. I would also like a remote to use for tv purposes Wow I dont want much do I!

How about the HP nx7400? Its a business class notebook with superb build quality.

The HP nx7400 is a good choice; you could also consider the Lenovo ThinkPad Z-series. It's a bit heavier than the HP but has a nicer keyboard, and you said you won't be carrying it around that much so the heavier weight is a mute point.
One final notebook you could add to your list is the Dell Latitude D820. Very solid, business class like the other two. I'd take the ThinkPad over it though.
