$1k Notebook Advice for son wanted

Question:
$1k Notebook Advice for son wanted
I am attempting to help my college age son replace his laptop and need to do it in short order,as college begins again 1/5 in Seattle.(He is currently in Ft Worth visiting for Christmas.)He owned a Compaq EVO which finally has surrendered virtually any claim to life.We need as BULLETPROOF and RELIABLE a laptop as can be procured for civilian use.We would like to stay around $1k, and have cdrw-dvd capability.I am looking on UBID at Sony k14's,but have read on this site of the Thinkpad .Any site for reputable used sales,or recommendations for generally trouble free, virtually indestructible recommendations? What brands should I consider or avoid?
Thanks for everything

Answer: For that budget, I'd look at the Averatec line. The 3250 is a thin and light that's pretty solid. They offer great value for the dollar.
