With your budget and gaming needs, probably going to suggest the usual:
For 14-15.4"
- Compal HEL80 (w/ nVidia 7600)
- Asus ZS96J (w/ ATI X1600)
- Asus A8Js (w/ nVidia 7700)
- Asus A8Jp (from newegg.com) w/ ATI X1700
- Asus G1 (w/ nVidia 7700)
For 17"
- Clevo M570U-A (a.k.a Sager 5750) w/ ATI X1600
- Dell e1705
- Toshiba P105
- HP dv9000t
Check them out at www.powernotebooks.com and www.xoticpc.com
Probably the Compal HEL80 will give you a fully loaded configuration for your budget and needs.

Re: Gaming Laptop recommendations
If you will be carrying the notebook around, I would not suggest 17" unless carrying 10+ pounds of equipment is okay with you.
In the 15.4" class, I would pick Asus G1 (you may have to increase your spending though).

Re: Gaming Laptop recommendations
Best bet is to go with the Asus A8Jp, if you want to stay within budget and get the best performance out of your system.
If you want to go cheaper, look up the S/Z96J Built-On Asus notebooks. Other than that, if you can find the right Dell coupon, the E1705 with a 7900GS GPU looks very attractive.

Re: Gaming Laptop recommendations
I like the suggestions above. They are all worth looking into.
If you are going to take it around a lot, I would strongly suggest a 14.1" system though for greater portability. It doesn't seem like a big difference in dimensions on paper, but once you've handled it you'll appreciate the smaller footprint.
The Asus A8Js/A8Jp and Compal HGL30 are excellent systems to look at.
If you want a 15.4" system, then the Compal HEL80 and Asus S96J/Z96J are good matches for you.
I think the Dell e1705 is a good 17" system to consider. More powerful than the other 17" systems that will fit under budget with the exception of the Clevo M570U-A from RJtech (but it will stretch your budget a bit).
