Re: Gaming Laptop
You may want to consider waiting a bit to see what is going to be available with Centrino Pro.
Otherwise, I would recommend a smaller system if you will be taking it around. The weight might not be a problem but the bulkiness of a 17" system is really not very conducive to a lot of travel.
I really like the 15.4" Asus G1p to meet your needs, but it's $1800. The Asus Z96J and F3J series are also worth checking on.
But a 14.1" system would be perfect for a lot of travel--the Asus A8Js/A8Jp are definitely worth a look.
Good luck.

Re: Gaming Laptop
For 15.4 inch notebooks, consider the Asus S96J and/or Compal HEL80. The HP nc8430 might be another option.
For 14 inch notebooks, look at the Compal HGL30 and the Asus A8Js and A8Jp models.

Re: Gaming Laptop
Asus G1 or F3Jp. 15"s
Or HP Dv6000t. 15"
Or dell e1705 (this will give you the best graphics option) 17"
Answer:
Re: Gaming Laptop
The Dell Inspiron E1705 is your best bet for price/performance. You can get a great configuration for under $1,700, and with an extended warranty since you want it to last a couple of years.
I won't give you a laundry list of laptops, but for 15.4" I would go with the Asus Z96J. Its X1600 256MB is a bit more powerful than the Compal HEL80's if the 3D performance is what matters most to you. If you are willing to take a slight hit in performance, then the HEL80 offers slightly better build quality and a few more features for about the same amount of money.
What it all comes down to is that you want a Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, and for a 15.4", a Go7600 or Go7700, ATI X1600 or X1700. In a 17" size, the Dell E1705 offers the amazing Go7900GS, which is far more powerful than the mid-range cards in the 15.4" machines. Take a look at the GPU guide for more info.

Re: Gaming Laptop
go with an ASUS G1, you wont regret it!
Answer:
Re: Gaming Laptop
In the 14" class, either the Asus A8Js/A8Jp.
In the 15.4" class, the G1.
In the 17", with your budget, only the e1705 with Go7900GS.
If you want any other 17" with a high end GPU, you will have to try
spending more money.
