Question:
laptop with a MATTE screen/good image quality for a photographer
General Questions
1) What is your budget?
about $1500, but if I'm convinced there's no good laptop for me for this price, I may add some
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
c. Mainstream; 15"4
d. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen (that's what I would like the most)
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
I'm a photographer and I need something that has good colour rendition. I have a PC with NEC 1990SXi and it works great for me at home, so I need only something to work with when I travel. I don't want to be surprised by the photos (that I prepared on laptop and sold) after getting back home and seeing them on NEC.
I will use Photoshop most of the time
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
different places, but maybe I will also use it on my desk, connecting to NEC, so DVI would be nice
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
no games, I will use Photoshop most of the time
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
I like Asus, Toshiba, Apple, hp maybe. I don't know many, I think Fujitsu-Siemens for example isn't of good quality (problems with keyboard and so on)
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
3-4 will be ok
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
I'd rather not buy without seeing
9) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in?
Poland
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
may be widescreen
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Widescreen
d. WXGA+ 1440x900; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
e. WSXGA+ - 1680x1050; Wider viewing version of SXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
f. WUXGA - 1920x1200; Wider viewing version of UXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
MATTE!!!!!!
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
a little bit, yes, but I won't buy a laptop that looks good and has a glossy screen for example (
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
I'm buying it this month and want it to last as long as possible, so built quality is very important for me. I want this laptop to be so good that I don't have to change it in a few years' time.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 160GB?
doesn't matter, I already have a second drive
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
DVD-CD/RW
built quality/ good colour rendition/ matte screen/dvi maybe/good price
these are important for me

Thinkpad T60 with Flexview IPS screen may be a good choice. Not sure your budget will cover it though.

Re: laptop with a MATTE screen/good image quality for a photographer
I'd go with a Thinkpad T or Z series. I would go with the Z61p because it has the much better ATI Mobility Fire GL V5200 256MB video card on the cheaper base system.

I can see those (with at least 15"screen) at about twice my budget and at the price of Apple with 17"screen, so I'm not pretty sure... Something else?
And could you tell me, which versions of IBMs have this Flevview IPS

maybe thinkpads are still more expensive in euorpe. the price appears to be lower in US. Macbook Pro is a good choice for photo editing, too (that's what I heard).

thank you
and could you think of some other brands?
macbook pro is still somewhere above my budget and that's something I will buy if I don't find anything else. And IBM yes, it is cheaper in USA than in Europe, much cheaper. the same about apple

Re: laptop with a MATTE screen/good image quality for a photographer
There are not many matte screen in the market, not anymore.
Compal HEL80 is a cheaper option. The screen is not as good as IPS, but I havn't heard any big complain either. It may be very hard to find a reseller in Poland though. People in Compal subforum can tell you more about the screen.
