Question:
Athlon XP-M the equivalent of Pentium-M?
I was just curious how these two processors compare. For example, the XP-M at 2200+, does that equal the performance of a Pentium-M 2.2GHz? How does these processors compare in turns of reliability, heat, battery usage? Also, what is the sempron? Is that AMD's Celeron?
Also, what processor should I be more interested in? I will be using my comp for Office Apps, web browsing, and simultaneously listening to music, IM, web browsing, word. I will be doing no gaming, and maybe occasionally editing one of my digital camera pics.
Thanks
Answer:
For a laptop, Pentium M is the way to go. You are never going to get the battery life out of a Athlon, Sempron, Celeron etc. that you will out of a Pentium M. At least four hours depending configuration for a Pentium M. There are a few Athlon machines that can go three hours, but they require larger batteries. Because of the larger on board caches, you'll get much better performace than the clock speed indicates. Putting in more memory will help more with multitasking than a faster CPU.

Unless you planning to have a thin and light with excellent battery life and willing to pay 1500 for it, I don't really see the need in getting a pentium M. Any AMD or even a regular celeron would be more than enough to handle your needs. There are still some good deals out there right now on AMD processor, whether it be Sempron or XP-M, it should be much faster than Celeron or the Celeron M. But like I said earlier, for the task you required, it shouldn't matter that much. Good Luck.

Answer:
in this case a low voltage or an ultra low voltage pentium m processor will fit your needs best: enough processing power for your daily tasks and maximum run times with a single battery.
i wouldnt buy a non pentium m machine, the price difference wont be more than a couple of hundred dollars, but there are huge differences in terms of usage

It is not thin and light or heavy either. Here's a review if you want to look:

More than enough processing power for your stated needs plus you should get 4-5 hours of battery time. If you are leave it mostly plugged into the wall you may find better deal on a Athlon or Celeron. Having owned both Athlon and Pentium M notebooks, reaching for the battery charger every couple of hours really sucks. My Pentium M is just as fast as the Athlon-M 2800+.

I was wondering how the cpu compares to the Celeron/Pentium4, Sempron/Althon-64 , because from what i've been reading the XP-M model is a

Could someone please sort things out, because i dont want to buy anything that performs like a celeron.
Thanks
PS. I'd be gratefull for any urls with relevant benchmarks.
Answer:
I bought a Fujitsu C2330 with a 1.7GHz Pentium M Dothan for $1249.00. So no, you don't have to spend $1500.00 for a good Pentium M system.
Answer:
zazonz is right, if you want Pentium M performance from an AMD, you're going to have to wait for Turion 64.
