Question:
Advice on a purchase of either an Acer or HP laptop
Hi all,
I'm currently looking at these 2 machines:

...for mainly work use. Nothing especially intensive or out of the ordinary; Outlook, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, the usual applications. I'm currently swayed towards the HP, given it's glowing review here:

I suppose I'll be playing the odd game as well as work use, so which would people recommend? I've been told the Acer will represent the best 'future-proofing' due to it's Core 2 Duo processor, but I can't ignore that excellent review of the HP :)

Uh, these two notebooks are totally incomparable in terms of quality...
The HP nc8430 is an excellent business-class notebook with top notch build quality; powerful video card, you can play the latest games on it; also thin and light for a 15.4". In short, you cannot find anything better than this HP and you have a really good deal for it.
The Acer Aspires are cheaply made budget notebooks, widely known with their quetionable build quality... and I would never buy a similar notebook.
Hope that helps.

It does, thanks. I guess I was concerned that I wasn't getting a Core 2 Duo, that's all. I didn't realise there was such a gulf in quality otherwise...
Thanks again.

I've just spotted that the NC8430 is the 1.66GHz model, rather than the reviewed 2.00GHz model. Should this change anything?

Core 2 Duos are about 10% faster than Core Duos clock-per-clock and they are 64-bit CPUs.
However, you will not notice that difference for regular stuff and games, also 64-bit capabilities are not so important for the time being. So, the T2300 (1.66GHz) will be fine for the life of this notebook, also CPUs are upgradable, if needed.
laptopsdirect.co.uk should start paying me for that...:D

Faster CPUs make difference in demanding tasks such a video encoding, rendering... but you probably won't notice that difference for regular stuff and games. It's processor itself that matters not the clock speed... Pentium 4 died a long time ago...:D

I see, I didn't realise. I'm not up to speed at all on this, which is why it's a good thing I posted here, I suppose.
Thanks again!
