G1 or E1705? Gaming and MULTIMEDIA

Question:
G1 or E1705? Gaming and MULTIMEDIA
G1 or E1705? Gaming and MULTIMEDIA
BASICALLY my question is very simple...do you think the 7900GS is worth the extra bulk, weight, and ugliness of the E1705 over the G1.
General Questions
1) What is your budget?
$3000 but under $2000 would be slick
2) What size notebook would you prefer?

c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
d. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen

3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
mostly work...but i want to be able to play the latest games. Also, I want to use 2 BIG monitors at my house and I will be hooking up the computer to perform alot of multimedia tasks: I will hook it up to the TV to stream videos, record shows, play music, etc. I will probably be buying HUGE external HDDs to store tv shows and such.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
...if I get the asus, I want to take it to classes, work, cafes, planes. If I get the E1705, I'll only move it when travelling for long periods of time, I might get an ultraportable to take to class.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
mostly strategy games but i want to be able to play the best.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
I'd rather stick to brands I know, basically Dell. I am willing to try Acer. I've read alot about Clevo and other brands like that on this site, I've decided I'm not willing to explore those waters even to save money or get better specs. HOWEVER: I could be convinced to consider the Clevo 570U or something branded by WidowPC..but it's alot more expensive so I dont know if it's worth it.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
2 at least, 3+ would be nice
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
nope.
9) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in?
You-Ess-Ey
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
WIDE
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Standard
c. UXGA - 1600x1200 - Very small text and graphics icons, you can fit lots of stuff on the screen.
f. WUXGA - 1920x1200; Wider viewing version of UXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.

12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
no clue..either i like both
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
yees
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
ASAP...to last...at least a year and a half, then i can donate it to a younger member of the extended family haha.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 160GB?
100GB 7200RPM preferred, but I can live with the G1 160GB 5400RPM
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
DVDRW..I wish I could get BluRay
edit: I do mean 'university' when i say 'school'

If you want to play the latest games, again i have to say get the M1710, you could get the E1705 but if you want to play the latest and greatest games, the 1710 would suit you well. I think you can get BluRay in them now also :)
Answer: The Dell e1705 is a great notebook for a $2000 budget.
The Asus G1 is a great 15.4" notebook for also a $2000 budget.
But if you have a $2500-3000 budget, you cant beat the Clevo M570U (a.k.a. Sager 5760, Aviator CX7, Rock Xtreme CTX, etc..).
Its the best 17" gaming notebook on the market.
Check out the Clevo Guide to see the resellers avaiable, which there are a lot.
Seems that the best pricing for the Clevo M570U is from:
You will get a fully loaded system with about $2500-2700 from any of these great resellers, just give them a call for better promotions.

The Clevo M570U has better performance/cost ratio and a better build quality than any other 17" gaming notebooks in its class.

I haven't dealt with Clevo before so i can't comment on them.

I haven't dealt with Clevo before so i can't comment on them. The Dell e1705 is "bang for the buck" 17" gaming if you have a budget of $1500-2000. In fact, the XPS M1710 is built on the same chassis of the e1705... thats why I said... rip off... markup.
If you ever have a chance to behold a Clevo gaming notebook in person, it will give you some major impressions and makes you want one. Thats what happened to me, seeing some1 else's custom Clevo (from Sager) at a LAN party that is sleek and NOT a normal brand...(uniqueness is a plus). Then I decided to get my own, I have yet to have any onlookers not wonder "is that a Dell?"... the answer is always... "god no" "its custom" :)
And at the last E3, it made Dell XPS owners drool. ;)

Asus g1 for the win...
if your not obsurdly rich go for the G1, great performance with a 2k pricetag...i'm able to play everything out there with high settings (then again i oc'd it but hay..) Dell is not a good place...they are evil, i no this might sound narrow minded but i've had (and know ppl that have had) bad experiences with Dell...asus has done fine so far.
sounds to me like you need a collage (school) computer and a gaming machene in one...and you want it to kick ass and be faster than any1 elses....sounds like a G1, its not a laptop that everone's seen comertials of, so it'll be an eye catcher/amazer.

im leaning towards agreeing with u m477hew...The only reason I'd get a E1705 besides the graphics card is if it had significantly enhanced multimedia capabilities (ports, ports, ports!)...does it?

Re: G1 or E1705? Gaming and MULTIMEDIA
I would go with the G1. The Dell is only the winner on GPU performance. The Asus g1 kills it in everything else. Not to mention its purrty :p

Should you decide to go the 17" route, the Clevo M570U is the system to beat right now. Easily the most powerful yet reasonably priced power system out there today.
I do love the Asus G1 as well. It's really a great value and sports a unique style of its own. If you plan to take it everywhere with you though, particularly if you want to use your notebook on an airplane--I would recommend you go with a 14.1" or smaller system. A 15.4" is not going to work on an airplane--unless you're flying first class, and is still rather large for a lot of on-the-go usage.
The Asus A8Js/A8Jp and Compal HGL30 are definitely worth looking at and will easily be under $2K. That way you can start to save up for your next system in a few years.
