Back to easy basics
Quickie,
Recommendations for a "very basic" laptop.
Friend of mine is looking for a laptop, she just wants something to do basic surfing and office type stuff (word, excel that kind of thing)
I guess I'm thinking that the cheapest laptop you can get nowadays should easily be able to handle that, so wasn't sure what people here would recommend, unfortunately I'm used to looking more for the top end laptops for my own needs.
I think at this point it probably comes down to which companies are better at customer service and more reliable laptops?

Check out the Compaq Presario Series

Filling out the FAQ would help though.

Cheapest notebooks come from Compaq and Averetec. They will definitely handle simple applications such as IM, email, word processing, web browsing, etc.

Re: Back to easy basics
As Dreamer mentioned, I'd go through the FAQs as well but here's my opening shot on suggestions:
I'd get a Compaq, HP, or Dell notebook, probably with the following specs:
- AMD Turion X2 1.6 GHz (or lowest available dual core model) - You don't need alot of power. If the AMD models are not cheaper (or are not offered) I'd look at the Intel T5500 or T5600 Core 2 processor.
- 1GB RAM
- 60GB+ HDD
- ATI, nVidia, or Intel integrated graphics
Also, getting a 15.4" notebook would probably be the lowest cost unless the size and battery life doesn't matter (then go for a 17"). If you go under 15.4" you will probably end up paying more since the notebook is smaller.
Best 15.4" suggestions:
HP dv6000z (or Compaq equivalent)
HP dv6000t (or Compaq)
HP nx7400 (better quality for a little more
Dell E1505 (probably lowest cost with Dell Coupons)
Dell D820 (a little better quality for a little more)
Best 14.1" suggestions:
HP dv2000z (or Compaq)
HP nc6400 (14.1" with great quality if you need a smaller notebook)
Dell E1405 (cheapest 14.1" you'll probably find)
Best 17" suggestions:
Dell E1705 or HP dv9000z
