You can go with a fortune of laptops.
I suggest you start by looking @ DELL inspiron and Hp Dv2000, they are much more durable than many cheap laptops at this price.

I would recommend the HP nx7400, it's business-class notebook with superior build quality and support, also thin and light (5.6 lb) for a 15.4"
Other than that, check the HP nc6400 which is the 14.1" version.
Of course, a 14.1" notebook would be much more portable, check out the screen sizes in person.

I'd toss in the ThinkPad R60 which you can get in 14 or 15" size though the 15" is over six pounds. It will offer you very good quality for the price.

Additionally, it seems that I have been asked to find a 17 inch notebook that has similiar specs, although realizing that it will be heavier. Any advice on that point?

I know the HP Pavilion dv9000t (Core 2 Duo T5200, 2GB of RAM) would be about $1,300 before tax and shipping.
