Re: computer engineering/science laptop?
Doesn't your university have some sort of computing requirement? Also if you are looking for a more specific laptop, please take a moment to fill out the FAQ. My roommate is an engineer and he uses a tablet PC--there are quite a few options.

Re: computer engineering/science laptop?
Are you going to be a student for computing engineering/science?
In that case, I suggest getting a laptop that is fairly portable and have screen size of 14 or 15 inch.
Avoid the 17 inchers unless you must need the screen all the time.
(Some ppl who work and do presentations might need this, but most of the time they would be better with a projector)
Avoid the 13 or less inchers unless you love reading lines of tiny code.
The specs also depend on your budget.
1. Very Limited - Compaq is usually the laptop of choice because it is cheap and available at popular retail stores.
- It will run find for most programs that don't involve 3d games, modelling or intensive math.
- You will notice the limits on RAM, HD, and processor, so don't depend on it for upper years where demands will grow.
2. Around $1000 - Dell, toshiba, and HP are very popular.
- They have excellent specs for the price, but you would want better if you play modern games.
- However, Dell notebooks are bulky even for 15inch. Tradeoff for the low price.
3. $1500+ - You can get many different notebooks with this price.
- I recommend ASUS. They have amazing specs and quality notebooks not available at large retail stores.
- These can run any program very well.
- Good for those like me who are very busy or impatient and want to be prepared for any type of software. (Check my sig)
You will be using lots of text and 2D programs such as compilers (Ex. Java and visual studio), and also some other CAD for circuits and computer architecture. Nothing special until end of 3rd year.

Re: computer engineering/science laptop?
I'm a computer engineering major and currently have a Dell Inspiron 8600. The majority of my classmates have Dells as well but a few others have HPs, Sonys, and Toshibas. As for the CPU, you don't really need a fast processor if all unless you are going to play games. For memory anywhere from 512mb - 2gb is good, it'll depend on what you want. As for programs, currently have these and maybe try and get some similar programs: Microsoft Visual Studio, Dev C++, Masm..assembly, xilinx, modelsim, logicworks, and so forth

Re: computer engineering/science laptop?
I am a computer engineering and computer science major as well. I recommend getting no more than a $1500 notebook. If you ask me, I recommend the ASUS a8js with Core 2, 100 GB HDD (7200 rpm) or less, 1 GB, 15.4" or less, with decent graphic card if your taking graphics. Thus, a $1000-$1500 range notebook is sufficient to handle your needs. Going over that price is a waist of money.
