Question:
$200-$300 Laptop Notebook options?
Are there any good laptop options out there in this $200-$300(max) price range? My friend just needs something that has good battery life preferably with internal modem and wireless capability & a built-in optical drive. Also, to be able to view several pictures and play videos. A PCMCIA card slot is necessary too. Any brand/model suggestions?

A Used Compaq or Averetec? The cheapest notebooks I have seen new are in the 400-500$ range. The last holiday season saw some 300$ new notebooks, but not anymore.

The cheapest ones I can think of are maybe compaqs, but they only go down to like $450.

If you keep an eye on Circuit City or Best Buy websites (or similar places), you might find something. Esp. if they have an outlet or discount area.
Costco is another possibility. I recall seeing pretty decent laptops there for around $300 before taxes, etc. around the holidays.
You could also put up a "wanted" ad here. There's a thread in what of the forums for sales/trades.

anyone know of some good refurbished or used laptop stores online? delloutlet laptops are all too expensive, so they're not an option :( .

Well there is always eBay. Used ThinkPads are usually good choices since they are well built, but as always when buying used things are more iffy. There are some used Dell and HP/Compaq business class models as well. Given your budget you'll probably have to get a PCMCIA WiFi card.

CompUSA occasionally has laptops for 400 after rebates - check their fliers on their website...

Check out Tigerdirect They normaly have referb laptops around.
