I want the laptop to be able to easily run Windows Vista Ultimate. I don't know if I should stick with an Intel 32-bit processor or go for the newer 64-bit processors (Turion or Core 2 Duo).
I'm sort of leaning towards the HP DV2000 because I like the built-in webcam and microphone. But I've read some reviews and stuff in other forums which make me question if that is a wise choise. I've read that the Dell Inspiron 1405 is faster and has a longer battery life. I like how the Toshiba Portege R400 is built for Windows Vista, but it's screen size is only 12.1", also how good is the construction?
I like my HP DV1175 but it's 2 years old I want to fully take advantage of Vista. The DV1000 line can't do the new Aero interface. I did install the Vista Beta 2 on a dual boot partition and it's pretty slick.

The HP Pavilion dv2000t is a good choice. Another option to consider is the 14 inch HP nc6400, a business class machine with excellent build quality.

The HP nc6400 is one option, then the ThinkPad z61t is another. Both are business-class notebooks with superior build quality and support.

Re: Help me replace my HP DV1000
Thanks for the recommendations. I'll probably look into them closer once Vista is out.
Which is the better processor for laptops - AMD Turion X2 64 or the Intel Core 2 Duo? Which offers better battery life and fastest speed?
I'll probably end up getting a system with 2 GB of RAM since I'm sure that the newer OS and programs are more memory hungry. I know Vista requires 512 MB alone.

Re: Help me replace my HP DV1000
I would recommend this model of the HP NC6400 as it has the ATI X1300 GPU, ensuring a better experience with Vista. It only has 1GB but you would have enough money left over after purchase to buy another 1GB of RAM. As for processors, it appears that at the moment at least the Core 2 Duo is the best choice. The HP NC6400 has that so it should be fine. Find the NC6400 here:

Good luck and happy computing!

Re: Help me replace my HP DV1000
Core 2 Duo will be faster. If you are looking at 4-6hrs of battery life out of a dv2000 then get the 12 cell extended battery, the 6 cell standard battery will only be good for ~2.5 - 3hrs.

Re: Help me replace my HP DV1000
Thanks. I think I'll go with the Core 2 Duo then. I know it's 64-bit, so that way I can take advantage of future 64-bit technology (I know there's not much out there now).
I would definitely get the 12-cell battery. That's what I've currently got on my dv1000 and I love it! I take my laptop up our cottage and just sit on our porch with the laptop all afternoon on a rainy day, listening to MP3, reading e-books and trying to teach myself C++ and Java. My dayjob is as a Cobol (I know, a dead language) programmer on a mainframe, but I'm trying to expand my horizons :-)
