Question:
Compaq v3000 Celeron or Sempron Need help.
Hi everyone I am looking for a inexpensive laptop for my little sister to use (2nd grade). Mainly it would be used to play educational games for her and the occasional web browsing and typing reports for me so a low budget processor i think would be fine. I mainly wanted to know if I should go for the sempron processor or the celeron. I've tried looking around for comparisons but can't find any. Any help would be helpful. Its between the
Sempron 3400+ (1.8ghz) or Celeron M 420 (1.60ghz)

I personally prefer the Sempron. Performance is about the same, but the Sempron supports downclocking the CPU which helps with fan noise.

I've been hearing that the sempron out performs the celeron. But I thought was based on pentium m and should that mean better performance? And is it true that battery life on a celeron is worse than sempron?

The Celeron-M 400 series is based on the same architecture as a Core Duo/Solo so even with a 200MHz deficit it might outperform the Sempron on sheer power. Celeron-M 400s are surprisingly quick!
Having said that, they do lack a fundamental feature of most other modern cpus and that is dynamic switching or speedstepping. This clocks the CPU down when it's full power is not needed and hence helps the battery to last longer. It also helps in reducing heat output.
If you will be using the laptop on battery much then the Sempron would be a wiser choice. If it'll stay plugged in a lot the Celeron I think will provide more processing power.

Either processor should do fine performance wise. The Sempron has the extra power saving features and for a 2nd grader has more than enough power. Just make sure you have decent amount of memory, 5400rpm HDD & you should be good to go.

cool im looking at one to have 512mb of ram at least and probably a 5400 rpm harddrive. I mean its going to be mainly used for educational games just wanted to see if sempron is a bad choice to go for
