Buying A Laptop For Sister...

Question:
Buying A Laptop For Sister...
1) What is your budget?
£600 (~$1200) tops.
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
Preferably mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Music Listening/Editing, DVD/Movie Watching, Photoshop, Office Work, Internet Browsing, E-mails
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Most of the time on the desk, but some mobility is a plus. 2 hours of battery would be good enough for me.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
Not a gamer, so integrated would do nicely.

Toshiba would be my first choice ideally, HP (own brand not Compaq variants) will just be as good.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
2 hours would be very good to me. Any more would be a bonus.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
Most likely that I will buy online given the competitive pricing.

In the UK.

Widescreen
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Widescreen WXGA 1280x800 is good enough for me.

Glossy screen please if possible.
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Some style is nice, but not necessary.
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
2-3 years is good enough
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 160GB?
Not really important, planning to use my own OEM drive is possible.
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
DVD+/-RW is the minimum. Dual Layer and RAM facility is nice but not necessary.

If you like Toshibas this is a good deal, but it's a bit lacking in ram. Another 512mb would be needed. My toshiba came with one 512mb sodimm of ram so an upgrade might be as cheap as another 512mb sodimm which would cost around £30.

Re: Buying A Laptop For Sister...
Only if you intend to play games. The only real advantages the more expensive one has is the X1600 gpu and the Core 2 Duo. As the Core DUo in the cheaper model has a higher clock speed performance (in 32 bit apps at least) will be very similar.
As for the gpus, the X1400 will handle light gaming ok and regular tasks such as music browsing msn etc. with consumate ease. You should only really go for the more expensive model with the X1600 if you intend to play some newer or more demanding games like Battlefeld 2 or FEAR etc.
Will you be doing any gaming on this laptop?

Will you be doing any gaming on this laptop? PC gaming will consist manily of C&C Decades and the soon-to-be-released C&C3.
What I am hoping I can put the faster gpu and core duo to good use is for HD video editing and getting a decent experience from Vista Premium.
Will my applications benefit from the higher spec A100? Or would adding say 2GB RAM to the lower speced version be better for me?
Cheers
