The three notebooks that I've been looking at are the Dell E1505, Dell D820 and the HP dv6000t because of their graphics cards. I think all three are comparable feature and pricewise. My question is if there are other Core Duo 2 laptops that I should be looking at in this price range... Asus, etc. $1300 is really the max I want to spend.

Re: $1200 Notebook
I'd suggest Lenovo. You said you didn't care about appearance and, although I find ThinkPads good looking, they aren't eye candy. Also, for occasional gamer it's perfect. One last reason is you said you like matte screens.
You might want to check out:
- ThinkPad T60 Widescreen ($1289 - this is almost exactly your budget)
- ThinkPad Z Series [Almost any of these will do] ($1080-$1599)

Re: $1200 Notebook
Both the E1505 and Dv600t are good notebooks. You can try the coupons in the dell coupon section to lower the price and have you consider the ASUS A8JP( C2D 2ghz, x1700, 14 inch(should be better for travel) for 1,300. It should defininty meet your needs and then some with tax and shipping it will be over 1300

Re: $1200 Notebook
you could also check out the compal hel80 with wsxga+ matte screen. if you can stand glossy, the asus s96j is worth a look. the asus a8jp is also a great bang for the buck notebook if you get it from newegg.

Re: $1200 Notebook
Thanks for the suggestions.
Kdawgca, the Asus looks like the best candidate out of all the setups I looked at, especially for price/features. Plus it has DVI output!
The only difference I saw was that the RAM was only 1GB. But if I chose a similar build HP or Dell, the pricing (with coupon) would realistically be a T5600. Stupid question. Would a T7200(2.00GHz) with 1GB RAM perform better than a T5600(1.83GHz) with 2GB in most applications? I know I can always upgrade RAM later.
Now my only problem is Newegg. ;)

the 2 gbs will definitely help out in most application and also in gaming adn there is not really a difference between 1.83 to 2.00 and you can always get a vga to dvi adapter
