$500, 14", daily-driver

Question:
$500, 14", daily-driver
I'm waiting to get a mobile workstation until I actually need it (next Fall), but I am wanting to get a 14" notebook under $500 (or around there) that can be used for everyday tasks, nothing major. Just internet surfing, basic office tasks, etc. Currently, I'm using a 900MHz Pentium III mobile with 128MB of memory and there have been several instances where I've felt like chucking it out the window.
Any recommendations? Grabbing a base-line Inspiron from Dell? Dell Outlet?
Or maybe someone knows of another option.
Thanks!
Instead of doing the entire FAQ, here are the only requirements:
new (not-refurbished), 512MB memory, current range of CPU (Core Solo/Duo, etc...).
around $500, +/- $50
prefer 14", but sometimes 15.4" is cheaper.

14 inch laptops are going to realistically start in the 650 range, and even then your choices are quite limited.
If you can tolerate the size increase to 15.4" your options increase exponentially. Dell has some entries in that price range (the B130 comes to mind) but they all have celeron chips. I think that will hold true to most other laptops in the sub-$600 range at the moment. Toshiba and Averatec have offerings around your budget but they are also Celeron/Sempron based.
I'm having a hard time configuring even low-end systems with core chips and coming in at your $500 price point. HP/Compaq have the v6000t and dv6000 units which can be configured for core chips but will break your budget by at least a hundred dollars.
If you can stand refurbished (i know you said no but...) you can get an e1505 or e1405 for around 550 through Dell's outlet. That will move you up into the 'core' chips but keep those last few greenbacks in your wallet.

Take a look at this:

The Compaq V3000Z looks like a great choice.

That $400 Compaq v3000z is a really good deal. I'd start by looking at that one.
