$500 to $800, you won't get much, especially for gaming. My laptop (see sig) was $1800. Your current machine is faster than anything you can get in that price range. Consider upgrading your RAM if things are running too slow. If you have 512MB, go to a gig. It's like having a new machine.

i've got £700-£750. i know that i can buy laptop with min 1024ram, 100gb, and nvidia geforce go 7200 or 7300. but is it enough for gaming(HL2,FEAR)?
Answer:
$800 is going to be tough as far as gaming goes. I think your best bet is to try to get a Dell e1505 with an x1400.

Please do not hijack threads. Thanks.
Read for more information on the GPUs you're looking at.
I think HL2 should be ok with a go 7200/go 7300, but FEAR may need to be played with low settings.

The E1505 will definitely be your best bet if you would want to choose Dell. In fact, I am at the same exact budget, and am pretty much solid on getting the E1505 with these specs (with a $200 coupon) for $800:
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5500 (2MB Cache/1.66GHz/667MHz FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
UPGRADE TO WINDOWS VISTA Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium from XP Media Center Edition
LCD PANEL 15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display with TrueLife™
MEMORY 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
HARD DRIVE 80GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE 24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
VIDEO CARD 256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™
SOUND OPTIONS Integrated Audio
Pretty nice for your budget, correct? Otherwise, I would go with the HP dv6000t.

Thanks! I looked at that laptop, configured it, and for around 825 I can get Core Duo and a 256mb Nvidia Go 7400, 1GB DDR2 SDRAM! That's a pretty nice buy for me.
Do you think HP will have a sale on this laptop or rebate around Thanksgiving or Christmas?

just like any other major company they should have deals during Christmas, not sure about thanksgiving. They'll have deals during Christmas but they might not have the deal you want on your particular laptop
if cash is an issue, you might want to wait, but if you need the laptop now, buy it now
