Re: Dell 1705 or HP 9000T
If you are a hard core gamer, go for the E1705 with a 7900GS card. The E1705 does not have a separate number pad.
The HP dv9000t has better build quality and the 7600 card, which can play most of the new games. The 7600 offers lower performance than the 7900, but is still an excellent card.

thanks a lot for the advice, gaming will be minimum, but besides work will be watching a lot of movies & music, so besides the better screen which has better speakers ?
also will the screen make a difference in movies, etc ? & hp coupons are not yet there - the 15 % one expired i think y'day

Re: Dell 1705 or HP 9000T
I think this is a real tossup. Personally, I think the HP is going to have better build quality and I like the number pad that comes with it as opposed to the Dell. I think the screens on both are probably good. I think it basically boils down to if you are planning on doing any real serious gaming I would go with the Dell, otherwise the HP would be your best bet in my opinion.

Re: Dell 1705 or HP 9000T
thanks guys really appreciate your help,
1 last question please, which of these 2 HP screens should I go for ? the 1st one has a higher resolution but is cheaper (dont know why) & the 2nd one dont understand the significance:
17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
Bring images and movies to life with HP's BrightView technology! BrightView technology improves the contrast and clarity of your notebook display screen. The 17-inch WSXGA+ BrightView display with high-definition means brighter, more vivid and color-rich images like you've never seen before in a notebook computer. The superb resolution of WSXGA+ (1680x1050 pixels) delivers movies, photos, gaming, and multi-tasking at a whole new level. High-Definition content (e.g. WMV HD files) is required to view high-definition images. Most current DVDs do not provide high-definition images.
17.0" WXGA+ Ultra BrightView Widescreen (1440x900)
Bigger, brighter, better!! HP's Ultra BrightView is a composite of all available LCD technologies currently offered by HP consumer notebooks. Ultra BrightView displays include an improved color gamut rated at 72% - more colors can be displayed as a result of the improved technology!

From what I understand the first one is HP's regular brightview (glossy) screen and the Ultra Brightview is also glossy but has two lamps that light up the screen rather than just one. So, this is the reason for the extra cost even though it is a lower resolution. For me, I would be fine with the regular brightview but if you want a really bright screen that is probably excellent for movie viewing then go with that. If not looking at movies much then the first one will be fine. Also, bear in mind that the Ultra will get lower battery life as a result of the extra lamp.

Re: Dell 1705 or HP 9000T
The HP will have the better speakers, one of the best available.
I would suggest that you go for the 1680x1050 resolution. It allows for more screen space. The Ultra BrightView is way too bright, IMHO.

Re: Dell 1705 or HP 9000T
ok thanks will take the 1680x1050.
will it help if I take 512MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600 or should I settle for 256, since vista is coming up ?
Answer:
Re: Dell 1705 or HP 9000T
Since your gaming is going to be a minimum, the 256MB graphics card should be sufficient, even for Vista. the 512MB card would make the notebook more future-proof though.
Answer:
Re: Dell 1705 or HP 9000T
I think you should stick to the 256mb version. For the price premium HP charges to upgrade to 512, its really not worth it.
