Basically it's down to the DELL E1505 Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 2Gb ram, 15.4" WXGA or the Asus S96J 15.4" WXGA 2Gb Ram, Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz
both have similar specs, but I like the media direct feature, the operating system and the brnad name with Dell.
If I get the S96J, I probably can't get the OS to fit in my budget. If I'm going to buy the S96J it's going to be from gentechpc.com for $1350
I'm not a big gamer, but if I get the Dell I can't play any games on it after 2 years I looked at Cyberpower, but the reviews were horrible.

The brand name Dell is not something you should be proud of :D. Dell, although mainstream, no longer (or never had) has good quality laptops or design. The only reason they have cheap laptops are because they use cheap materials, like cheap plastic.
If you really are looking for a "well-known" laptop brand, look at HP. They are much better in terms of quality.
I would pick the Asus S96J over the Dell Inspiron E1505. It has better quality, looks and support. But, it is more expensive, so it really depends on whether you're willing to spend more, or if you'd rather spend less.

The X1600 GPU in the asus z96j is about twice as powerful as the X1400 GPU in the Dell e1505. so based on that fact I would go for the Asus. Also look at the Compal HEL80 it costs about the same as the Asus but has better build quality and runs far cooler.
