Question:
GreForce 7900 vs 7600
Hello,
I am looking for something like the following:
http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4991041
http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4975961
(these are just what I am lookig for, maybe not the specific models)
I particularly want:
-Core 2 Duo (w 4MB cache).
-a Good graphics card
-2G RAM (1 would be fine as long as I could upgrade it)
I would want to wait for Windows Vista to get a notebook...but after reading about Pallidum (or w/e it is called) im not to crazt to get it when it first comes out. And since the Core 2 is out, I figure I may as well get a laptop now, even though it is for college next year.
So, the 2nd one basically is the basics, but with a lot of stuff I will never use (camera, all sorts of other things). My main question:
Is the GeForce 7900 256MB gfx chip in the Toshiba better than the 7600 in the Sony? (I have never strewn away from ATI before  )
If so, then the 1st is clearly my choice, better gpu and lower price.
Also, why are the FSBs only 667Mhz? Is that how all Core 2s are?
Thanks--
Raman

Re: GreForce 7900 vs 7600
We just went over this in the Thread below this one...
If you want the highest end in terms of build quality and performance, then look towards the Clevo notebooks (the highest of the high end, which are sold by Alienware, VooDoo PC, Sager, etc.).
Definitely the Clevo M570U-A is the best bang for the buck 17" gaming notebook for the budget of $2000.
Highlights:
- 17" WSXGA+ LCD
- Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.00 ghz)
- nVidia 7800 GTX (w/ 256mb DDR3)
- 2 gigs DDR2 Dual Channel
- 100gb 7200 RPM SATA
- Wireless + Bluetooth
- 8x DVD-RW Dual Layer
TOTAL: approx less than $2000
This is a fully loaded gaming system with a 7800 GTX that will outperform the 7900 GS at stock (without having to overclock or firmware hacking).
The build quality and performance is superior to both the Toshiba and Sony.

The 7900gs is stronger than the 7600. All Core 2 Duo chips run at a 667 FSB.
Gophn has recommended one beast of a laptop, I'd take a close look at it. If you want other suggestions, consider filling out the FAQ.

The Sony notebook you are looking at is a Sony SZ right? if that is the case it is coming with a go7400 not a 7600. Look into the Asus a8js, compal hel80 and HP nc8430, they may be what you are looking for. also have you seen a 17inch screen? they are far from portable.

I can tell you this from a few hours testing
Vista doesnt do anything xp doesnt do.
Only it does it all slower with bigger icons. When the reality of this thing hits its not going to be like 2000 to xp, its almost the opposite. Its like xp back down to me edition.

I have a beta of Vista, I dont use it though...The thing it DEOS do that XP won't is play Halo 2, which I have waited a long tome for to come out on PC.
Well, that is a great price for that laptop you suggested Gophn, I havent ever heard of that brand though, and I dont think I can buy it online...I am probably going to be confined to the store for this one. The 2 I have there I actually wehnt into the store and saw.
I am not to worried about portability, a 17" screen is fine, its probably going to replace my desktop when I go to college.
I am probably going to get the Toshiba if its gpu is better than the other, as you said. I want to buy it in a store, and Fry's has the biggest selection in my area (it isnt exactly in my location, a 40 minuite drive) and the best prices out of stores.
either way this machine will put my PC to shame, which was actually a decent machine when I built it (P4 3.0 w/HT, 1G Ram, x800XL 256MB). The 7900gt will preform better than the x800XL, correct?
Any other recomendations are welcome--
thanks!

Actually as Gophn says in the thread I posted in the other forum:
Alienware is slow to update their site and models.
The Turion X2 CPUs are ready for order on other OEMs that sell the same notebooks as Alienware.
For Example:
i've been posting this exact model from Widow PC in the "What Should I Buy" forums for the last month. :D
Heres was my most recent post:
If you wanna go up to $5000, then look towards the highest of the high-end ultimate gaming notebook:
Clevo M590KE (20.1" LCD, Turion X2 Dual Core, w/ SLI-mode (2) nVidia 7950 GTX 512mb)
Check out the WidowPC 919 (Clevo M590KE) at WidowPC
:D Specifications with $5500 cap: :D
Display: 20.1" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) LCD, with ClearView SuperBrite Technology
Modular Video Card: (SLI mode) 2 x nVidia Geforce 7950 Go GTX 512mb (total: 1024mb DDR3)
Processor: Mobile AMD TL-50 Turion 64 Dual Core 1.6GHz 512KB Cache
System Memory: 2048mb DDR Dual Channel
Hard Drive: 100 GB 7200 rpm SATA
CD/DVD Read/Writer: 8X DVD±R/RW Double Layer Burner
TV Tuner: Built-in TV-Tuner w/ Remote
Wireless Networking: Built-in Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g
Bluetooth: Built-in Bluetooth (version 2.0)
Battery: 12-Cell Smart Li-ion Battery
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (w/SP2)
AC Adapter: Full Range Auto Switching AC Adapter
Carrying Case: Standard Carrying Case
...And the extras:
-Built-in 4 Channel Stereo Sound System - SRS WOW Support
-Built-in 7-in-1 Card Reader (MS/MS Pro/SD/MMC/RS MMC/MS DUO/Mini-SD)
:D Total from Widow-PC: Approx $5300.00 + (Shipping to USA, UK, Iraq, Afghanistan, Puerto Rico... no Austrailia though.)
:D Yup, thats right folks. A notebook that actually starts its configuation at $4000.
But this is the best of the best... for gaming anyways. Dell aint gonna try to compete with this one.
