Cheap Notebook, Very Basic Computing <$400
Ok, hello guys! Anyways, im shopping for a cheap, basic laptop for my father for his work. Now all he will use it for will be typing up schedules and reports and a little internet browsing. Nothing else. So I want this to be as cheap and basic as possible.

1) What is your budget? Trying to keep it at or below $350-$400
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Basic Productivity, Basic Internet
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Desk 99% of the time.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
No Games.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Anything is fine.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
Not really much more than an hour or so.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?

Not at all.

Want to buy ASAP, and want it too last 2-3 years.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 160GB?
40gb is ok, 60gb preferably
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
CD-RW or DVD-ROM. Doesnt need to burn, but it would be nice.

i've heard some rumors that Wal-mart is going to be releasing a sub-$400 notebook soon... but ya, the quality of these compaqs is very good considering the price!

So far the only thing I can find is the $399 compaq, are there any cheap Dells with coupons? I've checked but i may have missed some.

Dell is not going to get that low because the lowest coupons are for notebooks $1,000 and above. You can take a look at the Dell outlet, though. Anyway, as of right now I believe that the v3000z is the best choice.

Dell outlet have sub 400 USD notebooks, wait till late at night and usually a few Celeron M's with 359 price tags will show up.
