Re: aussie buyer looking for best of bothworlds i guess
If you are going to be taking this laptop all over the place, perhaps a 14" screen would be best.
Although the Asus V1J is a very nice machine, I can't find myself recommending it to you since you don't game; it has an extremely powerful Radeon X1600 graphics card. Powerful dedicated video cards add to heat output and take away battery life - a waste, really. So, go for a notebook with either a low-end dedicated video card (preferable) or integrated graphics.
Take a look at the Dell Latitude D620 and the HP nc6400. Both look like good fits for your needs and are well built. They are both business-class. Neither have glossy screens, but that is a small trade off in my opinion.
There is also the Lenovo ThinkPad Z61.

appreciate the feedback, never thought about better graphic s cards and heat , just figured may as well get it, will go lower on this spec.
Have had 2 15.4 widescreens and like the room on spreadsheets that's the main reason here even though i have contemplated weight v viewing area etc.
Don't really like the pointing device on lenovo's maybe if they had a touch pad i would consider.
Delving into HP & Dell now for comparisons.
I really value warranty as i have just had issues twice with 2 toshibas so the ASUS 3 year is in mind always as well.
thanks again, great informative site, whatever i buy i will try to review.
cheers

How much of the spreadsheet you see depends on the resolution of the screen.
You can 14.1" laptops with the same resolution as the 15.4" laptops, thus giving you equal desk space although smaller yet crispier imagesw and text.
