Question:
internal dvd burners for lappys
where can i find these at?? i'm lookin for the fastest dual layer burner, but usually what i find are dvd burners for desktops. please give me some links. thanks!!
Answer:
i was am seriously considering the hp dv1000 or any other notebook with a firewire port. i'm actually lookin for a cheap laptop with 256 - 512 MB of RAM, a 60GB HD and a 1.6 or 1.7 pentium m. i could try to get one with a burner already in it, but thats kinda expensive. so, i'm thinkin if i get a comp with a firewire port, then i can always an external burner cause they're only gonna get faster, but i'd much rather it be internal.
also, is it true that when u burn DVD's u lose some quality when using a usb connection instead of firewire??
Answer:
What kind laptop do you have? You may want to consider an external slim one. One problem with buying a dvd burner is making it fit A lot of times the bezels of the two drives do not match. Sometimes you can swap or reshape the bezels, but not always. You could buy one from your notebook maker, but that is usually expensive.

It already has the burner and 512MB of memory which I would consider the minimim for running XP. It is not a dual layer burner, but there are very few projects which will require you to use a dl disc. DL discs are about $7 a piece right now compared to 30¢ for a single layer disc. The cheapest I could configure the dv1000 for with 1.6Ghz Pentium M and 60Gb hard drive was $1024 plus the cost of the burner which makes it more expensive than the Acer. Firewire is a little faster than usb2. If you do lose some quality it would be at some higher speeds like 12x or 16x which you will never see on a laptop drive because of the size and power supply. I've seen 8x external drives burn just fine on usb2. Good Luck.

Answer:
the funny thing is i was lookin at that acer earlier. if i were to get the dv1000 9 (or even the acer TM u recommended) , how long does it take to rip and burn movies with the 4x and the 8x burner?? that'll pretty much determine whether i add one to it, or if i should even keep lookin for a laptop with a firewire port. so, say like i do buy an external burner. ur saying that at 2x, 4x, and 8x movies bein ripped and burned via firewire or usb are exactly the same quality?? but at 12X or 16x or higher, which type of port should i lean towards then??
Answer:
Depends on a lot. How fast you can rip it. A lot of DVD drives are rip-locked, meaning they can only read up to certain speed. My Thinkpad's DVD-ROM can only read pressed discs at 5x even though it is an 8x drive. Sometimes you can fix this with firmware upgrades although that tends to be limited to desktop drives. I would be very careful about updating firmware. If you upgrade to an unofficial firmware, it would most likely void any warranty at least for the drive anyway. The hard drive speed is also going to slow things down. After you rip the movie, you have to re-encode it. That invloves a lot of writing to the hard drive. Most laptops have slower hard drives than their desktop counterparts. I had a NEC 4x burner in my old Presario. It took 18 mintues to burn a full disc. Half height drives burn the whole disc at 4x, the NEC started at 2.4x and got up to 4x about half way thorugh the process. I would suspect the Acer would be the same. I heard the NEC 8x version clocks in about 13 minutes. You may get better performance out of a external slim drive if it is plugged directly into the wall. I used a external LiteOn usb burner, the quality looked the same to me. If you want more info, I would head over to CDFreaks.com. They got lots of posts relating to external drives.

ahhhhh!! thank u so very much man. but i must ask your opinion on what would be best for me: should the buy the :
Acer TravelMate 4502LMi Notebook , the HP pavilion dv1000 with a 1.6 GHZ centrino 512MB RAM, 4x dvd burner and a 12 cell battery ($1194) or an averatec 3250HX or an Averatec 6210X ???? i'm not too crazy about the averatecs from what i read in reviews, but they fit my budget and have what i want. please help again!!!
Answer:
Depends. The only Averatec I seen is the 32XX. It looked a little low budget and it ran quite warm. Maybe the others are better, but they are Pentuim 4 and Athlon based machine so they are going to generate some heat as well. If you are going to leave it one the desk, then they might not be a bad choice. Between the Acer and the HP, I like the Acer better, but the HP is not bad at all. It is probably the better choice if you are more mobile as it weighs less. I would get the Acer and put in a Hitachi 7200Rpm hard drive. They run about $115 on Pricegrabber. That would greatly help your encoding speed. You can sell the old drive on ebay. You could also get the 1.4Ghz on the HP as a way to keep the price down. I doubt you'll notice much of a difference between the two.
