Question:
Ultraportable + core _2_ duo ??
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could help me out choosing the right laptop (you regular forum people must hear this a lot!). I have three basic requirements:
1) Ultraportable (13" and under)
2) cpu must support virtualization (so essentially core 2 duo -- not core duo)
3) long battery life, on the order of 4+ hours.
I've been looking for this sort of thing for quite a while. Does it exist? The closest that I've found was the new asus u5f http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?m...5&l2=75&l3=247
but I can't get it since I live in Canada. There are a few big drawbacks too: I think that the screen resolution is just 1024*768.
I really like the sony SZ's, but the battery life isn't so good.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

There is the Dell XPS M1210.
If your looking for a Core 2 Duo, 12" notebooks are the smallest you can find em in currently.

The sony sz can get 4+ hours if you get the high capacity battery.

The SZ should be able to break 4 hours easily.

You're not going to get better than 1024x800 resolution with an ultraportable.

Can you give us a price range, and a performance range? Depending on whether you're going to play games or not, or if you want to shell out top cash on a high performance system, people's recommendations will change drastically.

Re: Ultraportable + core _2_ duo ??
Thanks for all the replies. First, I should provide more info:
-video card: nothing fancy, integrated will do.
-price range: I'll say unlimited (it's not really, but I just want to consider all the options)
-performance range: any core 2 duo will do. The "2" here is _VERY_ important as the core duo's (without the 2) don't have intel's virtualization technology. So the thinkpad is out.
One of the most important things for me is the battery life. This notebook will be used for travelling, attending conferences, etc. I really like the sony TX series, but I think that the processor's weak performance would get to me. I do a lot of multitasking. For example, this is what I have open at the moment: 2 dos boxes (in which I'm compiling some code), MS visual studio, acrobat, thunderbird, firefox, Origin (like excel, but for scientific applications), Maple (like mathematica), iTunes, winSCP, and a vnc terminal (allows remote control of my linux box at the university).
I really like the sony TX series for their long battery life. I'd love to have something like the sony SZ, but with battery life like that of the sony TX.
Another thing that I really don't like about the sony SZ is that the power brick is huge. This really seems to defeat the purpose of an ultaportable laptop.

Core Duo processors (without the 2) and core solo processors all have intel virtualization technology (except for T2300e, with the "e", T2250, and T2050). You don't have to get core 2 duo processors to use intel's VT technology.

You'll want the Panasonic Y5. Legit 6 hours battery life (though they claim 9) and Core Duo 1.83 Ghz CPU.
It is a 14" screen, but at 3.3lbs the Y5 is actually one pound lighter than any of the 12" laptops that have Core Duo or Core2Due. And it runs on battery much longer than all of them too.

The Asus Z35F is the US model that does what you're looking for.
The U5 never was imported to North America.

MilestonePC is based in Canada...
Be aware that the T5500 doesn't have virtualization technology:

I have the Z33, the model before the Z35, and I love it....
