Laptop or desktop

Question:
Laptop or desktop
Which the new Santa Rosa Laptops with the nice new 8600M from Nvidia coming out i was thinking of replacing my desktop for a desktop replacement laptop. I have heard mixed things about desktop replacements though, how they are too heavy, hard to fix/upgrade, and they just aren't powerful enough. And then there are people that say they work great and can play the latest games. What are your opinions. I have looked at a few laptops that are coming out soon like the Acer Gemstone and the Asus G2 and the HP Pavilion d9500t, would they really replace my desktop, would they last like 3-4 years and still play decent games, and whats more ideal 17" or 15.6"?

Re: Laptop or desktop
If you don't want to carry it around or there's monitors and power cables at the place you want to carry it to always go desktop. There always faster, cheaper and more easy to customise. The advantage of laptops is that they're easy to carry around and don't take up as much desk space.

Well, do you need to be able to carry it around (whether it's regularly or every once in a while)? Do you require more space in a specific room? Will you need it for school or something? If all three questions are a "no", then you should forget about getting a notebook.
For 15.4" solutions, consider an ASUS G1S, C90, or a Compal IFL90.
For the 17", look into getting a (or a Sager) notebook. They're supposed to be really awesome desktop replacements. You can also consider getting an ASUS G2S.

Re: Laptop or desktop
I have used my el cheapo Dell Inspiron for 8 years(still running fine but getting old because of the limited memory I can put in and modern java/c# apps needs lots of memory) and the HD failed once(luckily within the first year).
Today's notebook is not that much slower than desktop(but much quieter and cheaper to run because of the reduced power usage) and I believe unless you are a hardcore gamer, notebook would meet one's need. The two most probable upgrade one is likely to do is memory and HD which most mainstream notebook allows you to change by yourself. And it seems that with a decent GPU, they play mainstream games well.
Just get one with DVI/HDMI output(if you are extremely picky about screen quality) and you get one of the very few things notebook don't have, choice of large display.
My current strategy is to a 14/15" notebook(they are almost as cheap as a desktop combination based on what I see on Dell) then a large LCD at the place I stay most of the time.

Re: Laptop or desktop
a notebook will struggle to last 3 or 4 years if you want to play the latest games.
I suggest getting a desktop. with that sort of budget, you would be able to get a decent desktop for gaming as well as a cheapish laptop for any mobile use.
I will grab the link to a thread for a good desktop.

Last question how is gaming on a 15.4" wide screen like? Is it enough or way too small?
