NP 2090 or NP5790 for University

Question:
NP 2090 or NP5790 for University
I will be going for engineering in September, and have narrowed down my choices to about two laptops. I can't decide which one would be better for University. It will also play video games thus the specs. The 17" vs the 15", which is a better mix of performance, price, portability, battery life.

:eek2: The only change I would make there is the ram. 4Gb is Way more than someone will need these days. 2Gb would be enough, even for the games.
Well, its your decision. Also, a 17'' notebook is quite a load to carry around...

Re: NP 2090 or NP5790 for University
Personally, I hesitated between these 2 laptops as well, and I'm going for the 5790. However, these prices you are listing are WAY OFF! you can get a 5790 with T7300, 7950GTX, 2GB RAM (2 SODIMM, swap in a 2GB for 3GB, which is enough), 160GB 7200RPM SEAGATE, for around 2200$ CAD.
Check out Eurocom.ca, they offer 5% student discount. Do not buy upgrades there, they are overpriced (especially RAM and T7500 CPU). So what I'm personally going to do is buy the very basic laptop, with 1680x1050 res - 5% Student discount for 1808$ Canadian + 36$ Shipping, Sell RAM + HDD + CPU, Swap in a 2GB Crucial SODIMM, Seagate 160/200GB 7200 RPM HDD, T7500, Intel A/G/Draft-N Wifi, all for about 2300$ CAD.

In terms of raw gaming power for games today, the 17" 5790 is better since the 7950 GTX is still the most powerful mobile graphics card. However, if DX10 exclusive games come out (unlikely because that's akin to marketing suicide), you'll be out of luck, but a lot of DX10 game, even Crysis, will have DX9 compatibility. If you want more future proofing, go with the Sager NP2090, and you can cut a lot of the cost out of that laptop if you want. If price isn't a factor for you, consider the size aspect of the laptop, a 17" is hard to lug around and isn't as portable as the smaller 15.4" Sager NP2090.

I'd go with 3GB of ram to save money, unless you plan on using 64-bit Maya or some such, in which case I suppose 4GB is worthwhile. Also, on the Sager drop the processor down to the T7300. You don't need anything more than that (probably), and it will save you money, heat, and battery life. As for the Intel Turbo Memory, it's entirely unnecessary with the hard drive and RAM configuration you have. It helps in systems with slow hard drives and not a lot of ram, but you don't have either problem.

Ok, heres a game to play: Carry the laptop and the power brick in your hands for ~1-2 Hours (airport wait time) and then post your answer;) I bet you will have a bit different opinion. Trust me, Ive tried it. But if a)you will only carry around the notebook from classroom to classroom, or b) You're a notebook geek who spends his whole life on the computer, and want to get a workout WITHOUT having to go to the gym/participate in sports, then the 17" notebook is for you:D

The thing is I like the larger screen, 7950GTX and HD resolution of the 17" but I don't know if the performance is worth the extra price I don't really mind the weight, An extra 15lb or so shouldn't be too bad. I am just more worried about the bulkiness of the 17", and the reduced battery life. The 15.4" on the other hand has lower res, smaller screen and worse gfx card, but longer battery life and similar specs except gpu. I would like to know how much of a difference exactly in gaming I will see between the Go 7950GTX and the 8600m GT and if it is worth it.

You can go to www.notebookcheck.net and check out their number on the graphic cards. They list the 7950 in class 1 and the 8600 GT in class 2. Class 1 being the better of course. They also list the cards with their benchmark scores.

Also I was wondering, how exactly do you upgrade a gpu for a laptop. There don't seem to be any available to buy, where would you get it? And do you just put it in (Assuming the MXM type is compatible).
