Hi Kyle, welcome to the forums.
Toshiba Satellites are cheaply made machines in my opinion. The chassis is not that sturdy and the plastic feels cheap.
You're asking for a lot of battery life . . . you may need to compromise on that. Take a look at the HP 6715b - it is a business class machine with great quality and a good keyboard. It has ATI integrated graphics and those can handle the Sims 2 fine.

HP dv6500t - You can get the base model with Vista Home Premium, C2D 7100 processor, 1 GB Ram, X3100 GFX, 12 cell batterym DVD-RW for around 1050 bucks.
HP dv600t - similiar specs with older C2D processor and integrated graphics for around $960.

Re: Standard Notebook for College Freshmen
I would go for the HP 6715b as well. It's business class, great quality, excellent keyboard and thin and light for its size.
The HP dv6000/6500t are budget notebooks, which are inferior in quality and keyboard and they won't last 4-5 years, I would skip them.
Check out the available models here:

Well, a couple of my friends own dv series computers, and while obviouosly not the build quality of my thinkpad, i thought they were pretty decently built unless you treat them roughly. And as looks seem to be pretty important to the guy asking the query, i would anyday suggest dv series over the business notebooks which are honestly quite bland.

The guy also says that he will be taking it to class and want it to last 4-5 years, plastic HP Pavilion will not survive that.

I wouldn't choose the look over the build quality, keyboard, weight, support...etc. Also, he said that he likes ThinkPads, so obviously the design isn't a problem here. Not to mention that you suggested a 12 cell battery, which is a real monster that no one would carry around.

Re: Standard Notebook for College Freshmen
Well my friend's HP lasted him 3 years of college without a hitch, so IMHO this guy's HP should also be with him for 3 years atleast. And if it is quality he is looking for, he should go for TP's. Nothing beats them in build quality and ruggedness.
Infact, you can get a basic R61 for around 1000-1100 USD.
