Question:
Warranty thoughts....tia
hey all......Ive decided on the fuji s6231 and have been pricing out models. At this point every dollar counts as i am up agianst my spending limit. the 6231 comes with one year warranty. I'm finding that depending on the web site i can save up to as much as 300 bucks if i only go the route of the 1 year and avoid spending more $ on 2 more years of warranty. In your guys' opinion is it worth the extra money saved to go with the one year. also, newegg has that pixle policy, should i avoid newegg even though they have the best non 3 year warranty?? thanks.

Warranty depends on how you are going to use the laptop, if it involves a lot of moving around then getting the warranty might be a good idea since parts tend to take a beating on the road. Portable One sells the Fujitsu inclusive of a 3yr warranty lesser than the retailprice at Newegg. Their return policy simply is terrible. If the laptop is defect free(in most cases) buying from them is not big problem, but if you de get a defected product then getting an exchage is a big problem.

I generally don't think anything beyond a year is worth the investment, but PortableOne offers it for only $100. In that case I think it's a good buy.

I agree...portable one offers a great deal on Fujitsu. and I think it worth it to get three year warranty. Then, you won't have to worry about anything for three years.

I second Miner- depends on how you plan to use it. 1 year should be plenty if you don't routinely drag it all over the place and run the the machine hot for long periods of time. I planned to take mine to and from school everyday and run for long stretches with CPU maxed out, so I got the 3 year warranty. Definitely buy from p1- I had great experience with them.

I disagree to some extent, personally I find the Warrenty very worthwhile, although you can normally buy this after the notebook (Toshiba at least offers the extended warrenty until the original runs out). But the issue is that laptops almost everything is one system board, if ANYTHING breaks, then the entire thing stops working (quite often) and you have to replace the entire systemboard (normally at least $600) so...

Well you also have to consider one additional factor for a warranty and that is what is available when the system breaks down. 2 - 3 years brings about a lot of new improvements in technology i.e. longhorn will be out, pci express will be more prevalent, and there maybe a lot of other interesting new features like maybe USB 3. The cost for your top of the line laptop now will be much cheaper probably under 1000 as everyone will want the newest tech. So IMO a decision to purchase an extended warranty is based a lot on how much you think your laptop will be worth in 3 years. If you believe it will be worth say over 1-1.5k then it's probably worth it. If say right now you are getting it for 1-1.5k then in the future it will probably be worth about 500 so a 300 dollar warranty just isn't worth it.

You can always get a Mack Extended Warranty. It's 3 years for only $100. A lot cheaper than Dell, HP, or any other warranties. Here's the link: http://www.mackcam.com/warranties/3yearintcomputer.html
I bought a laptop, didnt like it, so I gave it to my little sister- she has 3 solid years to destroy it. :D

Arla does make a good point in that there are lots of things that could fail on the system board, any one of which may necessitate a new and expensive board.
However, I don't recall seeing any posts over the course of the year that I have been on the boards regarding a fujitsu needing repairs outside of the 1st year. Somebody correct me if I am wrong. My impression is that they tend to work right out of the box and forever. The posts reporting problems with fujitsus seem to be during the 1 year warranty, which is plenty of time to get your laptop running right.
Dblank brings up an intersting point of view. In 2-3 years your current laptop may be worth close to what you pay now for the warranty, but I am not sure you would want to risk your $ buying a used laptop in 2-3 years to replace your broken unit.
Hmmm. Really, it comes down to when do you want to drop $1.5-2K again on a new machine. Whenever this one dies, or in 3 years? Buy the warranty if you are in the latter camp, save the dough for later if in the former.
All this talk of warranty also suposes that your laptop doesn't meet an untimely fate- in a car (somebody posted a picture of it around here), to a thief, dropped, spilled on, etc. Most warranties are no good in such cases. If you are a real klutz/slob/absent-minded, you might not bother with the 3 year warranty on hardware because you will probably kill/lose it in another fashion that won't be covered.

in that case there is always insurance. I hear that some people can get an insurance policy for their laptop for about 50 dollars a year which covers breaking and theft.
