i currently own a laptop that i bought 3 years ago when i started my study in business administration, it's a compaq pressario 700. Now i'm going to study in computer science and i need to buy me a new computer beacause this one is getting old and it's nearly broken.
i already own a old desktop pc (P 1.3GHz 512 RAM i bought it 4 years ago) and i gave it to my little brother but we live together.
i just need to decide between a desktop or a laptop.
my new computer will be mostly used for programming, surfing on the web, typing, downloding, music , videos. i'm not a big gamer and i don't think i'll be doing lot's of photo editing. i'll be working home or at school most of time.
Can you help me decide.

Re: laptop or desktop, help me decide please
Considering you're not a gamer, I'd say laptop. As long as you don't need stellar graphics performance, there's just so many good values in laptops. Then you'll have the option of bringing your computer to the library or class or wherever to code.
Two recommendations though:
Get a big high resolution screen. You'll be looking at it a lot, and basic 1024x768 doesn't display many lines of code, 1400x1050 or something similar will be much better.
Additionally, or as an alternative to getting a better screen, consider an external display as well. For me, programming is much easier when I can have a second display open with some documentaition or other code to work off of.

Well, this is a forum for notebooks, so I'm sure a lot will recommend a notebook for you.
I would recommend a notebook just because its so convenient to take around and do your work anywhere. A laptop will be significantly more expensive than a desktop with the same specs though.
Now, if you want to decide on a notebook, you'll have to tell us your budget and other things like what size screen you want and such.

What's your budget?
If possible, I'd go with a 700m with a coupon for the laptop, and you can easily get a mid spec'd AMD 64, 512 ram(Upgrade later), 160gb HD for under $500~ or so. Again, upgrade when needed :)

Re: laptop or desktop, help me decide please
Go for T42 or T43 all the way. Perfect fit for you. Just get 1GB RAM though.
Also consider Fujitsu. They are not a big player like IBM or HP but their machines are great. If not better than IBM, it's equal. Also make sure what kind of RPM HDD comes with it. Get at least 5400RPM.

I'd second the T42.
Check out the ASUS z63a as well.
