Hard Drive running temps - Seagate or Hitachi?

Question:
Hard Drive running temps - Seagate or Hitachi?
Ok Folks,
I have the L2000, which I'm tempted to return due to the heat created by the hard drive. The general consensus is that the hotter AMD chip isn't really heating up the notebook, it's this Toshiba drive (I had the samsung, and that was worse!)
However, in looking at replacement laptops, I keep finding the Pentium Ms (which I really don't want - and the MSI doesn't have a student discount or 14" version). Since this will cost me $200 - $300 more, I'm now thinking of just buying a hard drive that runs cooler than 50 degrees centigrade regularly - I'd love to be able to get something in the low 40s if possible.
So, let's start a thread and have people post what hard drive they have, and the mobile meter (or whatever program you use) temp reading. I think I'm down to Seagate and Hitachi, something in the 60GB 5400 range. But I'd go slower if that decreases the temp (even though my seek times will drop) or I'd go to 80GB 5400 if size isn't relevant where heat is concerned...
Thanks! :base:

My current drive:
Toshiba MK6026GAX 60 GB 5400rpm from HP
Mobile Meter temp at idle: 48 degrees centigrade
Mobile Meter 1/2 way through an NTFS format: 56 degrees centigrade

Hitachi HTS541060G9AT00 60GB 5400rpm
MobileMeter Surfing web: 35C
MibileMeter Burning DVD or Watching DVD from HDD: 35C
I think my HDD hit approx 40C or a bit over after running a full HDD defrag 3-4 times in succession using Diskeeper 9.

Toshibas are crap. Heat and failure rate are high. Customer service is second to everyone s abyssmal.
Go Seagate first, Hitachi second.

Go Seagate first, Hitachi second. Yep. Toshiba + Samsung = crap.
Hitachi/Western Digital/ and maybe Segate = great.
I have a Hitachi TravelStar 100GB 5400RPM HDD in my Acer, 55 degrees (HDTune) when I surf the web, up to 59 degrees after gaming or running antispyware/virus scans.
Yes, I know that is a high temperature, I am going to buy a laptop cooling pad!
BTW, I had a Western Digtal 80GB 5400RPM Scorpio in my zv5000, and it never got more than 39 degrees!!

My new Hitachi Drive, 5K100, just hit 50 degrees centigrade...
I'm really not happy about all this heat, but in my research it seems that the only cool running laptop are IBMs, and they are out of my price range.
So, I'm now thinking of buying one of those thermal blankets, cutting a small square out of it, and putting it UNDER the hard drive (so that it would be directly under the left palm case of my L2000) and see if that helps with insulation and to keep the top of the case cool.
But, I'm also thinking that it would just trap the heat in this little box that the drive sits in, and be much worse for the drive in the long run.
Thoughts?
Hmm...Now it's up to 51 degrees during a defrag.
And the Overheat Icon is broken...
:(
I am not a happy camper.
PS: I got the same model VB did, so I did have very high (or in this case low) expectations of coolness...

Same goes for my Hitachi, except mine is at...currently 56 degrees
I'd suggest getting a notebook cooling pad, that's what I'm going to do.
And yes, my hard drive is located under the palm rest/touchpad area, and, while the palm rest doesn't get hot, the touchpad is scorching!

Wintermute,
I have no idea why you're HDD is running so high. My HDD, during standard surfing, only operates at 35C and rarely goes over 40C. I did recently hit over 40C (can't remember what I was doing) but after it was done, it started to drop back down. The palm rest doesn't get uncomfortable.
I just noticed one thing, you have a L2000. I thought you have an nx8220 or nc8230. Since the drives are the same, it's probably something else that's causing the heat problem. It's possible the nx8220 has a better design to draw heat way from the palmrest than the L2000. Since the L2000 is an AMD system, it's possible the sytem runs hotter and therefore will drive the HDD temp up as well. You also need to see how the systemboard is designed. Is there any part of the systemboard under the HDD (due to lack of space)? This may drive the temp up. Check to see if there's a gap between the HDD and the palmrest. If it's sitting right on the palmrest (underside of course), that'll make the palmrest as the heat sink to draw off the heat and that would make the palmrest even hotter.
To cool down the drive, you need to draw the heat away from the HDD. Try using a copper plate or something to draw away the heat from the HDD/palmrest. You can also try leaving the HDD cover plate open (that's if the drive won't drop out if removed). If the temp goes down, then it's a vent problem.
