Need help buying a gaming laptop

Question:
Need help buying a gaming laptop
I am looking for a laptop to play latest games and do all things that I can do with my home computer, and i am not planning to buy another pc for a long time so I expect the laptop to do all things I need to do. Here are what i want:
-> Processor: I would preffer a 64 bits amd, mobile or Turion, but if i have to use centrino is ok anyway. I say 64 bits becasue I plan to use it with linux, and can run 32 bits apps as well.
-> Graphic card: I am looking for a gaming laptop, so i think i need a nvidia 6800/ati X700 or similar, to play games now available and games being released 1 or 2 years int the future from now.
-> Screen size: Well, i think that relies on processor decission. Most manufacturers only offer 17" screens if you choose amd 64 bits. I think that 15" is enough for playing (i am not going to be playing all day, just unreal tournament 2004, age of empires 3, san andreas multiplayer and test some new games).
Also aspect ratio is important. I need help choosing if 4:3 or 16:9 (both 17" and 15"). Just one question, two 15" screens one 4:3 and other 16:9 have the same width and different height or same heigh and different width?
-> RAM: 1024 MB at least, probably for gaming DDR2 or DDR333 is needed, i donīt know exactly which type choose. Better one module of 1024 than 2x512, so i couldnīt expand memory later.
-> Hard disk: preferibly 7200 rpm, is not needed too much space, maybe 40 or 60 GB are enough. i plan to use some USB hard disk or similar. Recommend me if I should invest in more HD space instead of paying for USB HD.
-> LAN/Wireless/56k modem/bluetooth. LAN and Wireless (a,b,g or simply b,g) are needed for me, but in worst case I can buy some USB LAN adaptor. 56 modem can be included as an option (if the laptop has serial ports i could use the conceptronic external serial port if I have to connect from a friendīs home). Bluetooth is not needed since I have it usb (both conceptronic and gigabyte) and work perfectly.
-> USB 2.0: no need to explain.
->No TV Tunner, can buy it USB.
-> I/O ports: if has serial/parallel/firewire is important so as to connect some kind of hardware
-> DVD +-RW (any speed) DL
-> Audio board, separately or motherboard built-in (like VIA)
-> Battery: i think with 15" will not be a problem...
-> Preferibly no charges for software, like windows, works, adobe, etc. If i have have to pay for it to buy a good laptop i will do anyway.
I will buy it in Spain or any vendor who exports here, i think any manufacturer can suit me (IBM, Toshiba, Acer, Dell, etc..)

I think the Acer Ferrari is your best bet.

Though the Ferrari is one of the few gaming laptops that use Turion, it is not necessary the best gaming laptop out there, the Dell 9300 or XPS2 is a better gaming laptop, but they use the Centrino. The Ferrari is better as a portable laptop, where as the Dells are definitely desktop replacements. Personally I'd recommend the Ferrari but if you want the most FPS take a look at the Dells. You may also be interested in the Asus z70va (refresh) which in specs is closer to the Ferrari.

Re: Need help buying a gaming laptop
The 9300 and XPS2 of course are better for gaming, but are too expensive (I think the XPS2 is overpriced) and 17" does not help to be very portable and light. With 15" maybe you have worse graphic card, but less resolution too so that helps you shouldnīt appreciate any difference. Indeed is much more portable and the price/weight increase is not worth.
The Asus z70va only ships with Pentium (why on earth such vendor wonīt include some AMD processor?), Asus only sells barebones and motherboards with AMD, so I prefer the Ferrari, because also is 64 bits.
So I am with you, the Ferrari 4000/4005 is a must buy

Re: Need help buying a gaming laptop
If you are in the US you should be able to get the 9300 cheaper then the Ferrari if you use the Dell coupons from this site. Also the Intel Processor is currently faster and better on power then the AMD. 64bits at this point in time is simply not worth it! That being said I went with the AMD. :)

Re: Need help buying a gaming laptop
I just bought an i9300 from Dell, and the games run better than on my normal desktop computer and I'm going to be using it for college so I thought it was going to be a little big, but it is not big at all. I can carry it around just fine anywhere I go. Check out the specs on it in my sig.

I am from Spain, and why the z70va is not available at Asus homepage for info? I think they do not care too much...

Re: Need help buying a gaming laptop
Well theoretically the AMD should be more future proof, but I fail to see how a slower CPU will handle new applications better then a faster one :) Really my point is I wouldn't choose not to buy a notebook just because it has an Intel...
