Re: Tell us about your notebook (specs, price, etc)
I paid just about $1600 for my Inspiron 9300, all accessories included. Bought it from Dell.com (obviously) back in...June, I think.
The specs are in my signature. The only things I wish it had were: better build quality, better screen, a numeric keypad, and (feel free to smack me for saying this) more powerful graphics. The 256MB Go6800 is great and all, what with running almost everything at maximum, but HL2: Lost Coast and Serious Sam 2 have to have HDR lighting turned down, and I can't enable any Anti-Aliasing and SoftShadows at the same time in F.E.A.R. What's the point of "enthusiast-level graphics" (nVidia's words) if you can't play everything to its greatest potential?
And I also wish I had opted for the larger battery. I get barely 2 hours if I'm lucky with this 6-cell.
But hey, what do you want for under $1600?
As for my AVERATEC 3270...I kind of wish I had just bought a 12" iBook instead. Oh well. Still not an aweful little machine for $890 (after tax). Bought it from Circuit City back in April.

I bought my dell 700m a year ago in December.
-1.6ghz,
-40gb 5400rpm hdd
-512mb ram 1 stick,
-8 cell battery,
-CD-rw/dvd drive.
Payed ~$1250 for it Dell Small Business, shipped to Oregon (no tax, woohoo!).
Since then, have upgraded to a dvd burner and a 80gb 7200rpm hdd. Looking to add another 512mb or 1gb ram before christmas.

Re: Tell us about your notebook (specs, price, etc)
The specs are in the signature,
I bought it last April on eBay. I paid $1600, but I also got a free printer which I later sold for $50.
Pros and Cons:
Pros -
-Solid Construction
-Great Support
-Three Year Warranty
-Best Laptop Keyboard
-FlexView Screen
-Modular Battery
-Dock Options
-ThinkLight
-Cool and Quiet Operation
-Light For It’s Size
-Six Hour Battery Life
Cons –
-Poor Panasonic DVD Burners
-More Ports
-Heavy
Mostly I like my notebook. It is a little heavy for my tastes, but I don’t carry it everyday so that helps. If I were going to do it again, I probably would go lighter like an ThinkPad x32 or maybe a Fujitsu S. At the time I got my T42, I was considering getting rid of my desktop and wanted a larger screen. I later got the Mini-Dock and 20” Dell LCD so I could have gone smaller. A memory reader for MMC card on my camera would have been nice, but I have an external card reader. ThinkPad’s DVD burners are not very good. I ended up getting an NEC external drive which is a much better drive, but it is hard to burn DVDs while lying on the couch.

I have a Boutique Rig - Sager NP-5320. Specs are in my signature.
Paid about $1,620 for it originally, but with all my upgrades, it is $1,900+.
Bought it in October '05, from www.PowerNotebooks.com - awesome service!
Not much about it I wish was different. It is heavy at 7.5lbs, that would be my main complaint. But, it doesn't move that often, so it is not really a problem.

Being a fellow Thinkpad owner, I agree with zazonz.
What I would like to add is that at the time I bought the Thinkpad, I decided it really would be a good idea to have two computers, so bought a desktop also and rediscovered what they have to offer. In particular, big LCD screens are nice. Surround sound is nice. Big hard drives are nice. Dual optical drives, large keyboard, lots of USB ports, etc.
Just as an approximate replacement cycle, I figure a new desktop makes sense in one to two years, and maybe a new notebook (X series ?) in two to three.

Re: Tell us about your notebook (specs, price, etc)
Bought mine in late September for $800AR, upgraded the memory (Corsair PC3200) for $190 and the hard drive (Hitachi 7K100) for $170. This is my first "personal" laptop that wasn't given to me from work. It fits my needs and should last me almost 2 years before I hand it down to my little sister and buy a new one.

This laptop gives me no problem at all except changed the cpu fan last summer. The success of this compaqlaptop makes me buy another hp/compaq nc8230.
Cost: $15000 HKD, ~$1800 USD
