Question:
I think I've narrowed it down! Asus v6va or Fujitsu S7000?
First things first:
1) I prefer a 14-15" screen.
2) I will be giving PPT presentations, surfing and sometimes doing animation and graphics work.
3) I will mostly keep it at the office but I travel about once a month.
4) No games.
5) I have no preference on brand.
6) Don't need alot of battery life - 2 hours is fine.
7) My budget is $3,000.
8) I don't mind buying online.
9) I would like an SXGA/XGA.
10) I would like a glossy screen. :glossy:
11) Stylishness isn't that important.
12) I would like the lap to last 2-3 years.
13) I would like at least an 80GB drive. Preferably 7200.
14) I need a DVD-RW drive.
Here's the one's I've scratched off my list:
IBM T43 - Screen bothers my eyes, returning it. Don't have the problem with any other screen including glossy.
Tecra M3, S3 - Only have standard screens - no glossy.
Dell anything - I'm tired of Dell, screens aren't that good.
HP, Gateway, Compaq - Not real impressed.
What I'm really looking for is a fast, relatively light lap with a very good screen. Isn't everybody? :p
V6Va :asus: - I like this one because it can be customized to hold a 2.13Ghz proc, 80GB 7200rpm drive and only weighs 5.5 lbs. It is my understanding that it also has a nice glossy screen.
Fujitsu S7000 :fujitsu: - I like this one because it's lighter than the V6Va. But it only comes with a 1.86 proc and a 5400rpm drive. I've heard good things about the screen also.
Please help me out by giving me your opinions/comments about these two systems. I'm especially interested in comments about the screens.
EDIT: I forgot to mention I need a display with decent viewing angle because I'll be showing presentations to people who sit next to me.
Thanks!!

what kind of graphics work? if it's 3d, then it'll need to utilize the powers of a video card, something which the V6va has,a nd the Fujitsu S7000 doesn't. If you need a vid card, get the V6va, other wise if you don't need it and don't intend to game. the Fujitsu S7020D is much cheaper.

It will be some 3d work. I won't be creating the animations but I'll need to play them. Can the Fujitsu handle that?

hmm.. I think the main thing is, will you do anything that requires rendering?

I don't think so, its got integrated graphics. Go for the Asus, although I don't know if that's got enough power either, only 64MB of the X700.

As of late, Fujitsu S series are having problems with light leakage. ThinkPad FlexView also offers wide viewing angles, but is not glossy.

Wait, scratch my other post. PROPortable just posted news that the V6VA will have 128MB of the X700, which should be good enough to power what you're doing.

I won't be doing the actual rendering.
I've read some complaints about the light leakage on the Fujitsu's too.
It sounds like the custom Asus v6va might be the way to go.
Star Tech is the only shop that does the custom right? Has anyone bought a custom from them before? Any issues? How are they with warranty work?
EDIT: I was just looking at some pics of the V6VA. Who's idea was it to put all the cable connections on the right side!!! I don't like that at all.

As you already know, Ensemble's are not customizeable, you have to do it yourself, and prices are pretty much the same everywhere. Star Tech is a well regarded reseller with lots of positive reviews, and yes they customize the Z70va, it starts at $2039

by choosing their customized Ensemble unit, you will void Asus' warranty (now downgrated to a 1yr global), and you get Star Tech's one instead.
If you choose the Fujitsu S7020D, www.laptopsinc.com (aka portableone.com) is the best Fujitsu reseller out there, they customize and have the one of the best service! the 7020d starts at 1499 I believe. big difference in price.. so make sure if you really need the Asus vid card capabilities.
