Question:
ASUS G1S-A1 Dual Boot XP and Vista

I need Vista and XP on the same laptop.

Answer:
ASUS G1S-A1 : 5400 RPM noticable
Asus G1S:
For those who started with the default 5400 RPM Hard drive, then upgraded to a 7200 RPM hard drive, how much of a difference was there performance wise? Was it worth it?
I know RPM's themselves don't tell the fully story and aren't the be all end all, but I'm interested to know.
If you did upgrade, was installing the new HDD a pain?

Re: ASUS G1S-A1 Dual Boot XP and Vista
Dual-Boot is possible. It's very easy to configure:
First you'll want to make 3 partitions. One for Vista (should be around 20GB), one for XP (should be around 10GB) and the third partition for storage.
Then you have to install Windows XP first and Vista afterwards. Windows Vista recognizes the Windows XP installation and rewrites the boot manager so you can choose which OS you want to boot at startup.
As for the HDD-replacement: It's very easy to replace. Just remove some screws, clip out the HDD...

Thanks ColdSoul,
Have you personally done a dual-boot on the G1S?
I'm concerned about drivers for XP since I doubt the G1S comes with XP drivers as it's a Vista machine.

I've heard that you need to slipstream the SATA driver so you can detect the hard drive in the xp install. Also you'll have to use a 3rd-party video driver for the 8600gt because asus has not supplied one.

No, i haven't done dual-boot on Vista yet, because i get my G1S at the end of this month. I've done dual-boot on my desktop and it worked without any problems.
As for the XP-drivers: I've posted a driver package for WindowsXP and it should work. My friend tried them and he had no problems at all.
Get it here:

Some of the drivers have a german description, ask if you have any questions...

ColdSoul, did your friend install it on a G1s? What video drivers did he use for the 8600gt?

You can find drivers for the 8600GT at LaptopVideo2Go
Just download the nVidia drivers and replace the original INF-file with the modded one.

I've already included them into the driver package.
As soon as i get my G1S i'll make a complete guide on how to install XP and the drivers on the G1S.

Re: ASUS G1S-A1 Dual Boot XP and Vista
I just got my ASUS G1S-A1 in the mail this week. After testing it with my games, my decision to dual boot XP for games was reinforced. My under-spec'd desktop outperforms the same games with identical settings than my more powerful laptop. We'll see if XP makes the difference.
Kudos to ColdSoul for the info and for the driver pack. Your help has been great! :)
