Question:
Apple Discount: Student, Developer...?
Hi,
I finally come to the conclusion, that Apple is the way to go, if I look for mobility, design, HDMI/DVI, GT8600, 2GB RAM...
I do have some questions regarding discounts.
MacBook Pro, 15-inch, 2.4GHz
Part Number: MA896LL/A
Accessory Kit
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display
Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
is my pick, for $2299.
I added a 30GB Ipod, since it's only $50 after mail-in rebate (I am going to resell it though).
How does the mail-in rebate exactly work? How long does it take me to get the money back?
Can I pay with a credit card from a different person, e.g. if I don't have one?
How do i get the Developer discount?
I really am on a tight budget, so any suggestions to save money are welcome - I would've settled for 2.2 Ghz version, but that only has 128MB Video-RAM (how big a difference is that?) and 120GB Harddrive.
Thanks guys!

Re: Apple Discount: Student, Developer...?
If you're a university student usually you'd get $200 discount for laptops over 2k. You'll have to use their student discount page and fill in their form to complete this process. Mail rebates are the biggest rip offs unfortunately. They hold your money ages (so you're looking at 6 months - 1 year) before you'll get your money back. However, if you're not in need of money baddly and you wanted to make some quick cash as you've stated above, it's not a bad choice.
PS: I believe the 2.4 Ghz 15 inch MBP is now $2799 (from apple.ca) Again, I'm not sure which location you're at but if you are in Canada take note of the new price.

Yes, Student Discounts are allowed in Apple Retail Stores. You'll need some proof though, a Student ID or sometimes you can just log into your account on your university website.

Do you know if it includes the nano-deal?

It does include the Nano deal. All Student Discounts come with the Nano deal. I'm not sure if you get it right there in store though.

Can anyone actually explain me, why Apple charges you with sales tax while other internet dealers don't?

If a retailer has a physical presence in a state (i.e. retail store) , then they have to charge state tax. NewEgg etc have no retail stores and hence have the advantage - but no student discount is available
so its either $200 discount + 200 rebate for ipod + 100 rebate for printer (yes, ou can get both rebates simultaneously)
OR
about $150 off as "no tax"
think about it :)
oh and sorry about bringing up such an old thread but this question seems to keep coming up repeatedly.....
