Avoid the 'crysis'... Visit Zellio's post for performance video card buying.

Thank you for clicking on my post.
We are all getting ready for DX10, which, if takes off, will be the best thing to happen to pcs in awhile.
So which video card should you get? I'll be the one to help.
For one thing, one of the most important things of the future will be texture memory. You want to say that Oblivion takes up 512 megs, but it's unoptimized?
Well, as much as you can optimize a game, you still need to store the textures into memory. And as textures get bigger... They will need more memory to store them.
The problem with oblivions texture optimization isn't that it's unoptimized, it's that the game must store 16 miles of textures into memory. If a game comes out nearly that size and with larger textures....
Texture memory will become one of the biggest things in the future. if you're buying DX10, you need at least 512 megs.
Another thing to consider is screen size. If you are gonna play Crysis on a 1280x1024 screen, you need nothing more then a 640 meg gts. GOnna play on even lower resolutions? A 320 meg would be fine.
Gonna play on 1680x1050, or 1920x1200? Need a 8800gtx or above.
Playing on higher resolutions, may wanna look at R600.
One final thing. In the past, you needed simply a good gpu and could overclock your cpu.
These new gpus REQUIRE a good cpu or they don't run as good.
Get yourself a C2D, and get a good quad core at the end of the year.
The thing with buying Dx10 is, you're buying for the future, so you must plan on that. If you're gonna be getting large, high resolution screens, to play crysis, you'll need something powerful.
The most important thing to remember is, do you really want the good graphics?
This is a sort of invesment. Buying DX10, you must think about what you will buy. If you also decide to buy a big monitor, you don't want to waste another paycheck getting another gpu.
And for some people on the forum, who may work at mcdonalds, that may be a large problem...
Now then, this is for performance video card buying. If you wish to play a DX 10 game not as demanding as Crysis, a 8600gts would be perfect for you.

Nice little blurb of info. You make some good, valid points.
I do have one questions though, has there been hard evidence out of what the R600 is capable of?

VR-Zone released some preliminary benchmarks of the R600. Since I can't find the chart, here's a more in-depth article:

Interesting stuff. I'll see how well my rig (8800 GTS 640MB Superclocked) handles Crysis, Hellgate London and BioShock before deciding whether to upgrade. By the time these games are out, the 8900 series should be ready.

Jack: The rig should play it fine.
There are two factors to this post:
1. DX10 does little or nothing.
2. DX10 does alot.
The problem is, if DX10 adds just a little, you'll need a powerful video card anyways.
And suppose it helps ALOT. Then games will get more graphically intensive and you'll need a video card with high amounts of vram.
I'm supposing if DX10 ends up helping a ton all you'd need for anything up to 1920x1200 is a 640 meg gts, but if it doesn't, you'll be looking at higher video cards :X
The best opinion of all may be to take a wait and see approach with DX10. Some of us can't :p, but for anyone who can, might be best.
If it helps just a little, you may be looking at a R600 or 8900 to play Crysis decently...
If it helps alot, you could safetly just get a 8800gts 640 and play games excellently.
Just grab yourself a x1950 or 7950 and play dx9 games until DX10 games start coming out.
One final thing: Not only do they require a good cpu, but newer games (even crysis) will be requiring quad core cpus. It's true.
IMO best time to upgrade is at the end of the year. You'll know how DX10 plays and you can get quad core cheap.
If DX10 turns out to be as good as it says the most important thing will be memory, memory, memory.
A optimal config would be this:
Quad core cpu
4 gigs ram
8800 gts 640
4 gig readyboost thumbdrive
