Hard Drive Replacement

Question:
Hard Drive Replacement (Sony FE770G)
I really need a new hard drive for my Sony FE770G. I can't seem to figure out which hard drive type I need, so I took some pics. I hope you guys can help me.
I'm looking for 5400 RPM, SATA/150, and from 80GB to 120GB of space.

Re: Hard Drive Replacement
Anything from this list on NewEgg ought to get the job done.
Sata drives are just that...Sata drives. They all have the same connectors and electrical specifications to guarantee they will work in all computers, so all 2.5" SATA 150 (also named 1.5 sometimes) will work.
What you have, and maybe what confused you (?), was the metal enclosure around the drive. That is just for protection of the drive and the laptop, and can be removed via the four screws...two on either side of the disk. Remove that, and you have the standard SATA drive in your hands :p

So when I order my new HDD and I get it. Am I supposed to remove the case and put it on the new drive? Or that isn't how it works? Yes, remove the protective shield and use it with the new HDD. The case keeps the HDD in place otherwise it would get damaged when you move the laptop around.

What if the protective shield has been damaged? When I dropped my laptop, the hard drive still messed up. (Some protection....) Anyway, what if I can't use that case?

Well, they arent really meant to protect from drops. They are meant to hold the HDD in place, so that it wont get accidentally disconnected from the socket or move around in the HDD bay. You can probably get away with not using it by just packing the bay with foam or some material to help keep the HDD i place and firmly connected with the pins.

I will order this tomorrow.
Also, minor, would these two be compatible?

I dont see any reason why they wouldnt. Both are 2.5" SATA150 drives which should be a drop in replacement with your current one.
One more thing, there might also be an adaptor used to attach the HDD with pins on the motherboard. HP uses such a adaptor, I dont know if Sony have something similar. So, just check the front of your HDD for any plastic adaptor which should be removable and attach it to the new HDD before installing it.
