Looking for the the Q6600? Check your step.

Question:
Looking for the the Q6600? Check your step.
Some of you might not be aware, but Intel is rolling out a new stepping of their Q6600 (and other) processors about a week before the price break of July 22nd. This new stepping is the G0, and is replacing the current B3.
*G0 stepping can be recognized by the 06FB CPUID. (The first Q6600 was stepping B3 recognized by 06F7)
*It is slated to require 95 watts down from 110 from the current Q6600. This is usually an indicator of higher
OC potential!!!
*It is also slated to have a higher tCase which means it will be rated for higher temps. In this case 11C higher than
the B3 stepping tCase of 62.2C giving it a 73.2C rating. http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...g0-thread.html
Basically the Q6600 with G0 stepping wil probably have better headroom for overclocking, or require a less extensive cooling solution than current Q6600s.
If you think you want this, check out Tank Guys. They have a pre-order for guaranteed Q6600s with G0 stepping; the only one I know of so far. They'll ask for a $5 deposit on the CPU which won't exceed $300. This may be slightly higher than other e-tailors, but they will personally inspect all the CPUs and verify their stepping before shipping them out to you. Well worth an extra $20 or so IMHO.
Currently there are about 70 people on the waitlist, which is AWESOME because 1)all the forums have people buzzing about how much they want a Q6600 @ July 22nd prices, and 2)they are the ONLY e-tailor offering a guaranteed pre-order. 70-100CPUs are a drop in the bucket when considering shipments of Q6600s and here's our chance to "step" up and get some nice hardware.
*Disclaimer: I have no association with Tank Guys nor am I receiving any benefit for advertising their site here. I just like to see NBRers getting good deals*

thats cool, but what do they charge after the $5, the ratail?

Re: Looking for the the Q6600? Check your step.
The prices haven't been set yet because the CPUs haven't been released. The $266 quote people are throwing around is wholesale for an order of 1,000 CPUs (total order being $266,000!). The actualy price will vary based on the retailer's purchase, transportation costs, overhead...etc.
I would expect the final price to be about $275-$290 + shipping.
After the pre-order they'll charge you the final selling price minus the $5 deposit.

so this "new" Q6600 is supposed to come out after the price break?

Actually, rhcpcrony, it will be released about a week before the price break, but most retailers are going to be trying to sell their existing stock of B3's before the newer processors. You have to look very carefully to find out which Q6600 you will get, and most retailers don't list that information.

That is some handy information. Thanks for sharing.

very interesting..ive been looking at getting this cpu as well...tho to the dismay of some of my friends saying "quads cores such at gaming" etc...tho i do some video editing and megamultitaking as well..i think this might be what im looking for :)...also..do you think with a quad core..4gb of memory would be useful?..or should 2gb be plenty.

The amount of RAM really has nothing to do with the CPU. The speed does however, and I would suggest nothing less than DDR 800 with 5-5-5-15 timings (4-4-4-12) being preferable.
The Q6600 with B3 stepping has been clocked to 3Ghz with relative ease. With good cooling it can reach 3.3 or 3.4Ghz stable 24/7. I would expect the G0 to have an even better OC, being stable at 3.5Ghz+. Of course with air cooling, you will probably be limited to about 3.2Ghz.
Even so, this CPU will NOT be the bottleneck of your gaming system. Right now quads aren't the best for gaming because the e6600+ processors can overclock to about 4Ghz without much trouble and current games can use that extra speed. Future games are going to be written for multi-core so they can share the load evenly over multiple cores. So, while a 4Ghz dual-core will great, the ability to dedicate a whole CPU to lighting, AI, sound, or physics will absolutely blow away a dual-core in the future.
If you are a video editor I'd say get 2x2GB RAM and possibly even use a 64-bit OS. If the rig is mostly for gaming, get yourself some great 2x1GB modules. At $150-200 for a top of the line dual channel set, you can't go wrong. I also know of no game that even recommends more than 2GB of RAM.
As far as megamultitasking...I haven't even read of anyone stressing a Quad-core too much. Basically you could run a dual-threaded video encoding program, an Orthos stress test, and still have an entire core for web browsing and other apps....that is just incredible.

Since i am not into overclocking much...will this G0 stepping really do much for me? Im looking at newegg and geez too many options for memory...is it worth getting memory faster than DDR2 800? lol...im beginning to see the bad part of being a computer geek..talkin about games i think i saw a topic on the upcomin E6850 vs Q6600....i think im hooked on this too much now...hellppppp

Nice, I may look into this if I find the funds for a new desktop because I was trying to find a B0 steping Q6600 well before I saw this thread. 4ghz + on air some people are hitting with the engineering samples. However ES are usually hand picked and preform better than most retial versions.
