Question:
What advantage does a Core 2 Duo processor have over Core Due when running a 32-bit OS?
I'm asking if it's really worth buying a Core 2 Duo processor if I plan on running XP/Vista 32-bit on it. Would it provide a significant advantage over a similar speed 32-bit processor? After all, I wouldn't be using the 64-bits at full potential. Almost seems like a waste of money.
Sure, in the future, 32-bit will be nearly obsolete and everything will be utilizing 64-bit processors, but by the time that comes around, I feel that these latest processors will be outdated anyway.

wat r u talking about? i think u need to google 64bit and read up on this stuff. sorry but too many ppl ask these questions that really have no basis if they bothered to read before they asked. pretty much all the latest CPUs are 64bit but that doesnt mean anything if u wanna run 32bit stuff, it doesnt matter cuz itll run it fine and it aint a waste of money. u say all that as if u think a 32bit CPU runs 32bit better than a 64bit would, read up cuz u wud know better if u did ;)

First off you have to realize that the Core 2 Duo is not just a Core Duo with 64 bit capability. The Core 2 Duo's have a architectural differences on the core which provide the boost in performance. Clock for clock a C2D will be ~10% or more quicker than the CD. The C2D will be faster than a similarly clocked CD in 32bit plus it can also run in 64 bit if you decide to use 64 bit OS.
Ofcourse if your uses are just basic surfing the web, ofice work etc then it makes little difference which processor you choose since both are more than enough to handle these tasks.

it depends, what 32 bit processor are you comparing it to?
against a core duo? its definitely faster, but the core duo is a really good chip. its still much better than anything amd can provide at the moment.
of course, if you have a core 2 duo, its not necessary to use a 64 bit operating system. the 64 bit extensions are not the only advantage of the core over the core 2 architecture. core 2 is revised, and better than the core architecture, even in 32 bit environments. it provides more performance and slightly less power draw.
64 bit operating systems are going to be mainstream very soon. right now 2 gigs of ram is almost standard. when 4 gigs of ram starts becoming necessary, 64 bit operating systems are going to be mainstream.
that means windows vista 64 bit, and mac osx. these operating systems are still going to be around when 4 gigs of ram becomes more standard.

To sum it up, yes there are a few advantages of the 64-bit CPUs (besides the 64-bit factor) like Core 2 Duo over Core Duo, like it draws less power, and for the same clock speed it is about 10% faster. I understand where you are coming from, and I must say that you won't be wasting money getting a C2D instead of a CD.
Also, are you sure the CD notebook is cheaper than a C2D? C2D has been mass produce for a while now that I think the C2D is about the same price as CD. Infact CD might be higher priced simply because manufacturers are not buying a lot of it now.

I wasn't asking if a 32-bit CPU would run a 32-bit OS faster than a similarly clocked 64-bit CPU would. I was asking if it would be the same, more or less.
But I understand now that it wouldn't, because of other reasons as well.
And I know I should read up on this stuff, but it's soo much easier asking on a forum. :)

I'm not sure if the CD notebooks are cheaper. I just assumed so because it's older technology.
Regardless, I'll be buying the C2Ds because I like keeping up with the times.

Good because now I don't have to explain again how Clock for Clock AMD turion64 X2 beats Core Duo and is 64 bit.
Edit: SideSwipe, based on your on your post, I'm thinking HeadOn was taken.:D

on my on my? lol naw thats my fav Transformer :P
though HeadOn mightve been a good choice but Id gather ppl would misinterpret what it meant LOL
