Desktop Configuration

Question:
Desktop Configuration
I have a cousin in India who plans to buy a desktop. He got a quote for Rs. 42000 (Indian Rupees). He has a kid who would be playing some basic games. Could you please let me know whether this configuration is good enough?
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor E4300 (1.8GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
512MB (2X256) NECC Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz SDRAM Memory
160GB SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive with Native Command Queuing
16X DVD+/-RW with Dual Layer Write Capabilities
15" Flat Panel LCD Monitor
Integrated Intel® Graphic Accelerator X3000 (with 1 VGA port only, no DVI port)
Integrated 7.1 Audio
Dell(TM) USB Quietkey(R) Keyboard(English)
Dell(TM) Optical USB Mouse
Genuine Windows Vista(TM) Home Basic 32 bit (English)
3-Year Limited Warranty (Next Business Day Service
FREE 1-Year Complete Cover
Could some one please confirm whether the processor and other configurations are good enough? The would be mainly using it for Word, email and playing some games. Also is this a good price in India? Are there any better and cheaper models in India? Thanks.

Re: Desktop Configuration
The processor is more than enough for the tasks mentioned, however, the computer lacks graphical power. Also, it depends on what games the kid wants to play. If for example, they are Command and Conquer types, then low cost graphics card will do fine. However, games like FEAR and Battlefield will benefit alot from a faster graphics card. More RAM is also something that should be looked into, as most games need at least 1 GB to run at repectable frame rates. RAM is quite cheap though, and is easily available for desktop computers.

Re: Desktop Configuration
Thanks for your help. Dell Dimension D520 has the following options for graphics card:
1) 256MB PCIe(TM)x16 NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 7300LE TurboCache w/TV-Out, VGA & DVI
2) 256MB PCIe(TM) x16 ATI Radeon(TM) X1300 Pro w/TV-Out, VGA and DVI
Which is better?
Also they have some options with P4 instead of Core 2 Duo. Are any of these processors good enough for the applications I have mentioned (Word, Email and gaming).
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 Processor 631 with HT Technology (3GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Dimension(TM) E520 Intel(R) Pentium(R) D 820 with Dual Core Processing (2.8GHz, 2x1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Dimension(TM) E520 Intel(R) Pentium(R) D 925 with Dual Core Processing (3GHz, 2x2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
They will definitely upgrade RAM to 1 GB after purchase.
Will it be better to have the same configuration in HP or Lenovo? How is the Dell customer support in India?
Thanks.

Re: Desktop Configuration
both those graphics card are horrible for gaming
it will barely run fear
to game, i would recommend at nvidia 7600 or higher or an ati x1650
the Pentium D is much better then the P4 but all will do the tasks you want it to (except for gaming for the P4 and the bad gpu)

Re: Desktop Configuration
If he is buying from DELL then I think it is not a bad price considering warranty and their service. But if he assembles it himself or get it assembled from an OEM computer maker, he should be able to get a faster PC for a lesser price. For any decent gaming you would need a 7600 or X1600 or better as hmmmmm said.
Having said that given above two cards, X1300 Pro is faster.

Re: Desktop Configuration
1Gb of RAM should be sufficient, grab two 512Mb sticks from Newegg, around $100 and you have PC6400
for light gaming, nVIDIA Geforce 7600GT is pretty cheap, and powerful enough for anything at decent resolution, it's around $120
a bigger screen, something 17", is nice :D
and as all others say, it's always much cheaper if you build it yourself, or buy the components and have someone assemble it

I highly doubt that he has the option of buying from newegg :p. And I wouldn't be surprised if X1300 Pro is $120 in India either

oh, sorry, i forgot he's in India :P. Then X1300 Pro is your choice, and E6300 is a waste, it's simply bottlenecked by everything else. Pen D 820 should be good enough, Pen 4 sucks, but can be used as a heater

Running games won't be a problem, even at high settings, as long as you have a good card and ram. Speaking of which you will need more Ram for games, unless they're old games.
As for the Pentium D, the 820 is slower then the Pentium 4 as the dual core only makes a difference if the application is designed for dual core, which frankly 99% of games are not at this point and the 3Ghz will outperform it in games.
All in all though I would definately go for the E4300 if the price difference isn't huge, but I'd go for the Pentium 4 over the D 820 (although the other Pentium D 925 is better)
