Question:
Cheap Budget Gaming PC: Under $800
Hello all,
I'm a law student who is unfortunately starting to get re-addicted to gaming. I have a Fujitsu S6231 laptop which has no dedicated graphics card so I can barely play games like Counterstrike (non-Source).
I'm looking to get a budget desktop for under 800 bucks. I just want to be able to play games like Counterstrike and Battlefield 2142. I don't need a monitor either. I'd like to build one but I've had bad experiences in the past with cascading component failures that lead to eventual complete system failures. So I'd like to get a pre-made desktop system with a warranty if thats possible.
Any suggestions you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

IMHO I would try building again, if not take alook at tigerdirects website.

Re: Cheap Budget Gaming PC: Under $800
that is... very tough.
w/ a budget under $800, you won't find any laptops w/ a dedicated card to play BF2142. An ATi X1400 is BARELY capable (or not even capable) or playing BF2142. Counter-strike works well on any of today's dedicated graphic cards (will even work on Intel GMA 950).
IMHO, Battlefield 2142 is out of the question.
I'm guessing you can try to customize a Dell inspiron E1505 w/ a X1400 w/ coupons and try to go below $800. that's my best bet.

If you get some decent name-brand parts from www.newegg.com, you can probably do well with $800.
mao: we're talking about a desktop here. However, a $1000 or so E1705 w/ 7900GS might be possible through the Dell Outlet.

Thanks guys, so you think some of the pre-built systems on Tigerdirect might be good?
Can you recommend any specific ones? I wouldnt be adverse to getting a barebones system or something and then adding in a 3d card.
I'm tempted to try building but my last system I built had a shortcircuit in the motherboard that eventually spread and burnt out every single component. It was horrible.
How would this system fare?

It's an athlon based system with a Geforce 6100 integrated graphics card.

Re: Cheap Budget Gaming PC: Under $800
i'm pretty sure you won't want to play bf 2142 on that ultra low end low budget $300 pc.
if you're talking 800 US, you can try going a little over budget and get this:

the e6300 is a very good OCer, though i don't think you can go over 3ghz with the ram and mobo...
maybe you can go to 2.4ghz with it with stock cooling

Re: Cheap Budget Gaming PC: Under $800
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 - $189.00
- $99.00
- ($29.99 after $15.00 Mail-In Rebate)
-$29.99
- $79.99
- $199.99
- ($64.99 after $20.00 Mail-In Rebate)
- $149.99
~$842 before shipping and taxes (if applicable)
you could go for a lesser video card, but you can't beat this bang for the buck, and you probably could get a cheaper hdd and even got 1gig of ram if you wanted, probably could shave off $100 if you changed those 3 items
that is if you build it yourself, of course

Awesome recommendations Rick... It's getting harder for me to resist building my own desktop now.
Still, I wonder if there are any decent deals on pre-assembled desktops.

Re: Cheap Budget Gaming PC: Under $800
building your own desktop is always best bang for buck as several people have noted
pre assembled desktops cost more cause they have to put it together added to the fact that most people know dittly squat about computers so they charge a premium for that service.
building your own though imo, involves more hassle as if any parts break, you probably have to pay for the shipping to manufacture for your warrenty unlike factory built
i too suggest you build your own desktop. that is a great recommendation rickster

I think you're a bit out of touch with mobile hardware. The X1400 has no problems whatsoever running BF2142 well above low settings.
I would also recommend a cheap E6300 and overclock it, although even without overclocking it would still be good for games.
