Question:
Connect laptop to desktop
I just bought a new notebook and want to copy documents, music, movies, etc. (gigs and gigs of data) from my desktop primary computer to my notebook. I used flash drives and 1 gig SD cards to move things before, but there's just too much stuff for that to be practical in this case.
I have a network in my home in that my wife and I use a hub to share a cable internet connection between our computers.
How do I create a network to share files, printers, etc. between computers. Do I have everything I need?
Please forgive my utter ignorance in this issue. Thanks for your help!

If you are on a wireless network, it simplifies things quite a bit. Windows will set up a "Home Networking" scheme where you can shares files/folders (and 'see' the other computer)
If not, you have to create a connection between between your two computers through the hub, or directly to each other.

Turn on file and printer sharing on the pc you want to move files to. Makes sure both pc's are in the same group. Then use the connection wizzard to connect the pc that has sharing turned on. Once connected move the files.
This is assuming that you are connected through router or hub.

is there any security risk for doing this?

The only way it would be unsecure is if you do it over wireless and your wireless network itself is not secured. If you're really paranoid, just plug your laptop directly into the router via its onboard ethernet connection. Also, only turn on file sharing when you need it.
