Dell brings back Windows XP due to customer feedback

Dell announced that it is bringing back Windows XP as an option for home users; certain desktops and laptops are now being sold with the previous-generation operating system. Four Inspiron laptops (E1405, E1505, E1705, and the 1501) and two Dimension desktops (E520, E521) are now available with XP Home or Professional in place of Vista.

Dell originally started to phase out Windows XP at the end of January as did other manufacturers. This made Dell customers unhappy and because of over 11,000 votes for Windows XP on Dell's IdeaStorm website, Dell responded. Microsoft did not have much to say about the announcement, except that this is the sort of action OEMs usually take (offering a previous-generation of Windows after a new one has been released), and that the "vast majority of customers want the latest and greatest technology, and that includes Windows Vista." Microsoft is not allowing OEMs to offer Windows XP on new systems beyond January 2008.

AMD reveals details about upcoming mobile platform

AMD's Giuseppe Amato talked about the company's mobile roadmap for the next two years with several interesting details. Amato did not give much insight into the 65nm versions of its current AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core processors, only that "These will appear anytime soon to the market."

In 2008, AMD will reveal its K10-based CPU family for mobile computers, codenamed Griffin. It will be designed specifically for mobile use; in the past, AMD only optimized server and desktop processors for mobile use. The new processor will be able to take all power away from the second core, leaving only one active.

Before Griffin is released, AMD will introduce Hybrid Graphics, a combination of integrated and dedicated graphics. It should be appearing sometime this fall according to Amato. Hybrid Graphics allows a notebook to use power-saving integrated graphics while on battery, and a dedicated unit while plugged in.

AMD will be adding DisplayPort to its 2008 mobile chipsets, and it has been hinted that there will be R600-based graphics with DX10 and Universal Video Decoder (UVD) support as well.

OLPC shipments delayed until Q4 2007

Quanta Computer is delaying its shipments of the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) XO notebooks to Q4 2007 from Q3 2007. The cause for the delay is a delay in the designs of varied application scenarios for different emerging markets. According to sources, Quanta has not yet released its orders for parts and components necessary to produce the notebooks.

This delay could affect Quanta's projected OLPC XO notebook shipments of 10 million units as well as the revenues of the part suppliers.

Just got my e1405 today 2ghz Core 2 refurb for $739. Bad news is it came with Vista Reemium. Good news is that it only took me an hour or so to put XP on it. I had to track down all the drivers, but well worth it.

Microsoft....ouch, Dell going back to XP a big blow considering Dell is still the #1 PC company. I'm glad to see Dell make this move and hope that when 2008 rolls around they fight with Microsoft to keep XP available until Microsoft comes up with the new OS they had originally planned to make 5 years ago but bailed out on. When I think of latest and greatest technology I think of graphics cards and processors, not Vista.

Surely by 2008 the issues that currently exist with Vista will be ironed out and it won't be as much of an issue any more (people wanting XP instead of Vista)?

That's what we'd all like to think, but I have a feeling it isn't going to happen, especially with the way Microsoft is intentionally accellerating the first service pack.

It speaks about the dell issue, lowering of vista's price as well as pointing out other issues as to how Microsoft is secretly admitting the problems with windows vista windows ME II ;)

I had also read the Inquirer article and was about to post it here. It makes a fascinating analysis of the situation.
I've currently got two Vista upgrades being delivered but at $30 each they are a bit of future-proofing in case Vista finally finds its way.
For me the "must have" feature of Vista that I read about a year ago was the proper handling of display size and resolution. Finally, after reading several reviews of Vista I found one last week that highlighted that this feature was not in the final release.:(
XP has plenty enough bells and whistles (my XP has the eye candy switched off) and Vista seems to be more of the same with added problems of more difficult handling of digital media.

I just don't get people's problems with Vista. If you have a somewhat decent computer it will run well. I've never had any problems since I bought my Vista laptop and as of now wouldn't even think of installing any other OS.
Other than that I wonder how AMD's new platform will perform...
