HP today announced the new nw8840 and nw9440 Mobile Workstations. The nw9440 is HP's most powerful mobile worstation to date. Both new notebooks feature the Intel Core Duo processor.

HP is working closely with Microsoft to ensure that both workstations fully support the upcoming Windows Vista. They are also compatible with all of HP's current notebook accessories. Lastly, both notebooks have a comprehensive security suite, including HP ProtectTools, integrated fingerprint readers, a smart card reader, TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 1.2, and enhanced BIOS security.

HP Recalls 15,700 notebook batteries

HP, with the help of the US Consumer Products Saftey Commission, announced last week it is recalling 15,700 HP notebook batteries worldwide; about 4,100 of them are in the U.S. with the Pavilion, Compaq, and Compaq Presario brand names. The Li-Ion batteries included with these models are labeled with a manufacturer date of Janurary 2005 and bar code label prefix L3. At least one burn injury and eleven cases of property damage have been reported so far, resulting from overheating batteries which can melt or burn the plastic cases.

This isn't a rare issue - there have been an alarming amount of issues regarding Li-Ion batteries lately. HP last October recalled over 135,000 notebook batteries for the exact same product line.

Intel Core Solo/Duo prices to fall

Intel is planning to introduce the next-generation Merom processor chips at the end of this year. For now, Intel is planning on introducing the new high-end Duo, the T2700, in addition to cutting prices on its existing Core Solo/Duo chips.

The T2600 will be reduced to $422, T2500 to $295, T2400 to $240, the T2300E is being introduced at $210, and the Core Solo T1400 will be the same at $210.

Price cuts on the T2500/T2600 processors result in about a 30% reduction, which is quite signifigant. The T2700 will be the new high-end chip.

Intel is also planning to introduce the ultra low voltage Core Duo, the U2500, which will run at 1.06GHz with 2MB of L2 cache. The U2500 will retail for $290. The new ultra low voltage Core Solo processors, the U1300 and U1400 will run $260 and $240 respectively.
A price cut on the Celeron M chips are also going to take effect; the 390 and 380 models will be reduced, being followed by the introduction of the 420 and 430 models.

Fujitsu LifeBook S6310 and S6311 13.3" Core Duo Notebook Released in Taiwan, but Not North America

Fujitsu last week launched a new product in its LifeBook S6000 series of products, the 4lb S6000 series was upgraded to a Core Duo processor, the S6311 has a "SuperFine" glossy display, while the S6310 is regular matte screen.  Unfortunately this laptop will not be available in North America as Fujitsu has decided to drop the 13.3" form factor here.

Intel Centrino for desktops - the "vPro" platform

Intel has unveiled its latest platform, dubbed "vPro". You can think of it as Centrino for desktops and Viiv for entertainment centers. Soon, you might find another sticker on a business desktop PC if they are Intel-based (naturally) and meet the requirements for Intel's next-generation "professional business platform" requirement, "Averill Pro."

vPro will provide built-in management (using AMT), proactive security (using VT), and energy efficent performance provided by the upcoming Conroe processor. Intel did not provide specific information on the specific processors included under the vPro branding. It has been rumored that the platform will be limited to the Conroe E6000-series and the Q965 chipset.

Intel is following the trend it started with the immensely successful Centrino branding for notebooks, continuing with the Viiv sticker for entertainment PCs and now the vPro label for business desktops.

Microsoft reveals Vista Media Features

Microsoft claims that the 'inventions' it's integrating into Windows Vista will make a worthy choice for content creation, delivery and playback. It will do so by releasing a multimedia API, providing application isolation with re-usable components that support low-latency audio processing, in addition to DirectX video acceleration for hardware. Vista is claimed by Vole to be "more resilient to glitches."
